In response to a RFP, I have prepared a table showing the possible network protocols for interconnecting Digital's client & server system (as follow). Since I am new to DECwindows, and I do not know if such a table exists in any official publication, I would like to get some comments and feedback. Thanks, Dominic Tso - Toronto SWS +------------------------------------------------+ | S e r v e r S y s t e m | +---+---------------+--------------------------+--------------+------+ | |System | VMS | ULTRIX | UNIX | | C +---------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ | l |Protocol |DECnet/|TCP/| | |DECnet/| | | | i | |OSI |IP |LAT|AppleTalk|OSI |TCP/IP|TCP/IP| | e +---------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ | n |Product |DECnet-|UCX |VMS|AppleTalk|DECnet-|ULTRIX|UNIX | | t | |VAX | | |For VMS |ULTRIX | | | +---+---------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |VMS (DECwindows) | | | | | | | | | DECnet-VAX |XXXXXXX| | | |XXXXXXX| | | | UCX | |XXXX| | | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |ULTRIX (DECwindows)| | | | | | | | | DECnet-ULTRIX |XXXXXXX| | | |XXXXXXX| | | | ULTRIX | |XXXX| | | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |MS-DOS | | | | | | | | | PCSA Client |XXXXXXX| | | |XXXXXXX| | | | LOCUS PC Xsight | | | | | | | | | Server (+ TCP/ | | | | | | | | | IP Transport) | |XXXX| | | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |Macintosh (MacX) | | | | | | | | | PCSA Client |XXXXXXX| | | |XXXXXXX| | | | ADSP | | | |XXXXXXXX | | | | | MacTCP | |XXXX| | | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |X Window Terminal | | | | | | | | | VT1000 | |XXXX|XXX| | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| | VT1200 | |XXXX|XXX| | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| | VT1300 |XXXXXXX|XXXX| | |XXXXXXX|XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ |UNIX Workstation | |XXXX| | | |XXXXXX|XXXXXX| +-------------------+-------+----+---+---------+-------+------+------+ * UCX == VMS/ULTRIX Connection ADSP == AppleTalk Data Stream Protocol

The thing I see most obviously missing is LOCAL transport on VMS/VMS (when they are the same node) and UNIX DOMAIN for Ultrix (same conditions, I think). Burns

Have you looked in the SPD, btw? There are a variety of inter os compatibility statements etc. I'm not sure if they talk about specific transports so clearly. That is a good and useful chart that you made. Burns

Another transport mechanism available on many UN*X type systems is the shared memory transport. It is an alternative to the local transport. Dan |
