3485.0. "SET DISPLAY -- ULTRIX VERSION" by JURA::ARBUAH () Wed Oct 17 1990 23:25

    Hi there,

    I've read in this conference about displaying Ultrix DECW applications on
    VMS stations. Can anyone tell me what the Ultrix equivalent for the VMS
    command, "set disp/cre/node=NODENAME" is. What I'd like to do is fire
    up a VMS session manager on my VS3100 running Ultrix. Currently I can
    do this via a dlogin to the VMS machine and then use set display back
    to the Ultrix machine. However I'd like to know if I can do this as a
    background process directly from the Ultrix machine.

    You ask a number of questions, let me tackle them one at a time.

    The equivalent of "set disp/cre/node=NODENAME" on ULTRIX is
    "setenv DISPLAY nodename::0" if you are using the C shell and want to
    display on a system running only DECnet (the most likely cases).

    You cannot run the session manager and have it display on any other
    machine. The session manager handles logins which are related to
    security of your system. It would be a major security breach to allow
    the session manager of another system to masquerade as your system's
    native session manager.

    You may find running VUE from your VMS system displaying on your ULTRIX
    system will give you what you really need (asuming you don't mind
    using VUE of course.)

    There is a way to kick off VMS processes from ULTRIX but it isn't
    pretty. It involves use of task-to-task communication and requires
    special setup and cooperation of your system manager.

    By the way, just like VMS is always spelt with capital letters so
    is ULTRIX. It is a trademark of DEC's, protect it by using it
    correctly.

Greetings:

   I would be very interested in knowing more about the "not pretty" method
of starting up a VMS process from an ULTRIX machine. It is very important
that I be able to do this.
