3435.3 | If SUN offers a VMS version of the MIT X kit, why not get it from them? | CVG::PETTENGILL | mulp | Tue Oct 09 1990 01:08 | 16 |
| Just kidding...
Sun is able to offer the MIT X kit for Sun computers because MIT has done all
of the packaging and much of the work to make it work on Sun computers. This
is because MIT does its work with Unix, and has a significant number of Sun
computers, as well as VAX and DECstations. MIT does not use VMS, so the kit
from MIT requires a lot of work to make it work on VMS. The fact that Sun
offers the MIT X kit isn't an indication that they are commited to supporting
X, it instead indicates that they are not putting as much effort into X as
DEC does, even for Ultrix alone.
One source for the MIT X Window software is decwrl::"/pub/X11". Its not exactly
a kit, but it has everything that MIT distributed, plus lots more.
What kind of debugging tools are you looking for? We support the use of the
usual operating system debuggers with DECwindows.

| DECUS has a CD of much of the MIT X11.R3 release, converted
to compile and run on VMS.

| The same CD has the complete R4 release unconverted, btw. The converted pieces
btw, are the applications. They did not port the server etc.
