Sometimes, when I'm sitting at my VAXstation 3100 Model 40, minding my own business, I hear the RZ56 (system disk) start making a lot of I/O noise, like what one might expect when doing a DCL "SEARCH" operation on a large directory. If I do a $ monitor process/topdio I see that a process called DECW$FD is doing a lot of I/O (20+ per sec). What does this mean and should I do something about it? VMS 5.3-1. Thanks, Bruce

3432.1 | Maybe someone is requesting a font load? | KYOA::KOCH | It never hurts to ask... | Fri Oct 05 1990 09:52 | 10 |
Well, its possible, but couldn't it be a VT1xxx requesting down-line load of the fonts? Do a directory of the system logical DECW$XTERMINAL_FONT/SIZ=ALLOC/TOT and you'll see a lot of files to be down-loaded. Does this problem continue forever or does it eventually quiet down? While it's happening go into LATCP and take a look at the ports in use. This might show you who is requesting the load. | |||||
3432.2 | Yeah, probably | MBALDY::LANGSTON | Rdb Sales Support Mercenary | Mon Oct 08 1990 21:24 | 12 |
That's probably what it is. I have recently agreed to let my secretary use my workstation from her VT1000. One day I was at a customer site and she called me, saying she "couldn't do anything." I put her in touch with a DIS guy who has my system password and he said the DECW$FD "was looping." He re-booted the system, and she was able to do her stuff, whatever it is. I don't think I want my DECW$FD looping, do I? :-) Is this possibly/probably related to a LAT "glitch," or is it a bug? Bruce |
