3385.0. "System Crash - VMS 5.4, DECwindows, VAXnotes and SPX" by MUTTON::LAMB (Peter Lamb - FSG Santa Clara) Mon Sep 24 1990 14:50

Hello,

This is just a preliminary entry (I have not put in
an SPR yet because I don't know what layered product
to put it in under)

I have a two headed VAX Station 3100/SPX (second head
is monocrome) I am using 100 DPI fonts (I have a
question about this but that will come later)

I'm running VAXnotes V2.1 on screen 1 (the monochrome)
and when I open a conference and read a note and then
iconify everthing except the directory listing and then
press ^Z in the directory window (to close the conference)
the iconified read window is left behind.

I then opened this window and used the File - Close
Conference pulldown and CRASH!!!

I'm trying this again as I write this note to see if
I can reproduce it (but thought I would get this in
first in case it did crash again).

Note: I am running SSB 5.4 that I just copied over
from MADRE""::SYS$KITS:[VMS054] and have installed
the manditory patch.

I guess at this point I am looking for suggestions as
to what sort of problem this is VMS, DECwindows or
VAXnotes and under which one I should file the SPR.

Regards,

3385.1Couldn't reproduce it...MUTTON::LAMBPeter Lamb - FSG Santa ClaraMon Sep 24 1990 14:525
Well, I just tried it again and this time when I tried
to bring up the pull-down only VAXnotes died. It did
not result in a system crash.

When you say crash, do you mean literally a system bugcheck, or do you mean
that the server stopped, or the window manager stopped, or something like that?

If it was a system crash, do you have the dump file? If the server, we would
need the server log file.

It sounds like there may be two problems here...one in VAXnotes (which causes
it to behave strangely when you hit ^Z in a certain state) and the other some-
where in DW which sometimes causes some sort of crash.

3385.3System crash but may have been related to hwrPJVAX::LAMBPeter Lamb - FSG Santa ClaraThu Oct 11 1990 12:3412
    Hi,

It was actually a system crash. However, has only happened once and
shortly after that I had to have my SPX board replaced so it may have
been hardware related. On the other hand its not the sort of thing
I do every day... deleting an iconified notes file but when I get a
chance I'll try it again and see if I can get the system to crash
    again.
