3380.0. "VMS V5.4 MUP caused /GPX "colour" changes" by WIKKIT::WARWICK (Trevor Warwick) Mon Sep 24 1990 08:30

We have a number of greyscale /GPX systems (both 4 and 8 plane) running
VMS V5.4. The Login screen on these systems radically changed
appearance in VMS V5.4 (it's now displayed in largely unreadable shades
of grey). Also, various other "colour" oriented things changed - the
watch cursor always used to be black and white, but now it shows up
grey and black. Some applications display different colours too. For
example, XMAZE, XCHOMP etc. all seem to use the Screen Background
colour as the Window background colour.

This behaviour started with the VMS V5.4 final mandatory update, it
didn't happen in the previous FT Update version of V5.4.

Can someone say what has changed, and whether it is intentional ?

Did your DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM file get trashed?

No, that's intact. Is there anyone running a greyscale /GPX on V5.4
    that hasn't noticed a change ?

The thing that changed in the final days regarding gray scale was this: We used
to, for gray scale, pump down equal quantities of red, green, and blue, so that
even on a color monitor you would see grey. We were asked (an understatement...
we got a CLD) to change it so that it was possible to drive only the green wire.
It seems that on certain combinations of hardware, driving the unused wires
caused garbage in the other lines.

If you were using a color monitor, this could have caused your picture to turn
from grey to green. Otherwise, I don't understand it.

I suggest a QAR...this very code is being worked on at this very moment (by
someone else) for DW V3.
