3344.0. "1-2-3 instructions needed to change font" by AZUR::LANGENSTEIN (Hubert Langensteiner, @VBE) Fri Sep 14 1990 13:09

Hello,

I received a 3100 VAXstation with colour monitor and am sort of unhappy
with the default fonds. The small font is too small and the big font much
too big.

Having looked up this notes file there is a lot said about fonts but
I haven't found some 1-2-3 instructions for a technically blind person
like I am. My questions are:

Q: where can I find a list of fonts available? The DECW$XTERMINAL_FONT
logical points to a badge of files but funny enough, there is no
corresponding file to the font mentioned in one of my collegues
   DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT?

Q: once I have the list what exactly do I have to put in DECW$TERMINAL_
DEFAULT.DAT? What effect does wildcard (*) has in a font's name?

Any help is very appreciated, and thank you very much in advance...

Hubert.

The default font for my VAXstation 3100 is really terrible. So could
someone please tell me whether I have to change my work-station or
whether I can modify the font somehow...

   Any help/informationion is appreciated.

Which default font? For your DECterms, or something else?

You may have the wrong fonts loaded for your machine. First you need
to take a look at SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM or
.TEMPLATE to see how the 75dpi or 100dpi fonts are selected. Then, you
can modify the file and reboot with the "correct" fonts if necessary.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then you really shouldn't be
    trying to change your fonts.

For DECterms, there really isn't much choice. You can switch to a
courier font, and get some different choices in sizes. To find out about
fonts, you can use a tool like xlsfonts (?) or GOBE-LIST-FONTS to
display samples on your screen. To switch fonts in DECterm, you can
use the /WINDOW switch on a CREATE/TERM command.

3344.3Where to find list of fontsSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentTue Oct 02 1990 14:3014
Appendix D to the Guide to Xlib Programming has a list of all the fonts
supplied with DECwindows.

You can use the CREATE/TERMINAL/WINDOW_ATTRIBUTES qualifier to choose
a different default font. However, the fonts only come in certain
fixed sizes. If the supplied sizes aren't what you like, you'll have
to create your own font files...

The font name can be wildcarded. The server will pick the first font
name in its list that satisfies the wildcard match. Normally you
should specify enough fields to keep the search small. For example:

	-*-Terminal-Medium-R-Normal-*-140-*-*-*-*-ISO8859-1

My first impression after I have got my VAXstaion was "gee, what an
owefull font - one hardly can read it"

Maybe my problem is that I should go to an eye doctor but what if I
    would be a vain customer?

Now I have the VAXstaion for some weeks and I still don't like the
fonts and I still don't know how to easily change it.

Why is it not possible to have a directory with more than 14/18 sized
fonts, and some clear instructions documented for how to customize it?

Does someone know who is responsible for this?

re: <<< Note 3344.2 by DEMON3::CLEVELAND "Notes - fun or satanic cult?" >>>

>>> Which default font? For your DECterms, or something else?

Yes, I'd like to change the default font for DECterms.

In my login directory I found a resource file DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT
defining a *roman*180* (big) and *roman*140* (little) font.

On SYS$SYSCOMMON:[SYSFONT.DECW] there aren't any fonts of a size other
    than *18* and *14*.

>>> ... DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM ... If you don't feel comfortable doing
this, then you really shouldn't be trying to change your fonts.

Found this file and it really looks interesting, however, haven't seen
anything what relates to font sizes but density?

Question: what is the difference between DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT and
              SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM for fonts?

Question: where can I find fonts other than *14* and *18*?

Thank you very much for answering. - Hubert.

is a directory I can look up?

Question: it works! However, presume that I find a font I like where
would I have to specify it to make it default. If it is the
DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT file then what do I have to do to
make it effective (log out of the session manager and in)?

    RE: switching density....

If you use the 100 dpi fonts on a 75 dpi monitor, everything looks
bigger. That's the easiest way to increase the size of everything
without changing countless resource names in .DAT files.

    RE: choosing new fonts...

One good way to look over the available fonts is to play with the
    customize menu in NOTEPAD.

You can change DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT to switch permanently to a new
font. The easiest way is to do a "save current settings" and edit
that. It may already have the changed font names if you used /window
    to create that DECterm.

I think you're heading down a dead end, though. You'll probably want
to use a monospaced font, and your choices are the DECterm fonts and
Courier. All the rest are proportionally spaced and look bad in a
variety of situations (character cell graphics, columnar data, etc.)
I wanted to do exactly what you're trying to do when I first started
using DECwindows, and I ended up back with the default DECterm fonts.

Well, currently I feel not for asking for _a_ special font. Any font
would do that is between the little (140) and big (180).

My eyes get tired reading the small font and the big font (exaggerated)
uses up almost the whole monitor.

Where can I find a font. How do I load it?

3344.9how can I change fonts for DECW$NOTES ?LEVEL::OSMANsee HANNAH::IGLOO$:[OSMAN]ERIC.VT240Tue Oct 16 1990 17:1311
For DECW$NOTES there doesn't even seem to be a relevant
.DAT file to start mucking with. Is there any way
to change the fonts used by DECwindows notes ?

I found mostly how to change the DECW$MAIL fonts, because
it *does* have a .DAT file (DECW$MAIL.DAT).

Thanks.

    Notes customizations go in NOTES$DEFAULTS.DAT.

Again, the simplest way to change fonts is to:

    	- Select a font with NOTEPAD customize
    	- Create a DECterm and specify the font with /WINDOW=(FONT=...)
	  e.g., for a "mid-sized" courier font:
    		$ CREATE/TERM/DETACH-
    		$_/WINDOW=(FONT="-*-Courier-*-*-*--*-140-*-*-*-*-*-*")

If you like the DECterm that results, do a "save current settings" from
the customize menu and it'll be permanent.

Other ways to look at fonts: DIR SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSFONT.DECW.100DPI] or
    							       .75DPI]

There's something floating around called GOBE-LIST-FONTS that I have a
copy of; it allows you to wildcard the font names and then lists out
the matches in a window. Another nice way to pick a font.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, the other solutions (like
modifying DECW$TERMINAL_DEFAULT.DAT, or the server density) are
    probably not for you.

3344.11hard to customize fonts when there isn't even a NOTES$DEFAULTS.DATLEVEL::OSMANsee HANNAH::IGLOO$:[OSMAN]ERIC.VT240Wed Oct 17 1990 10:4421
Even though I've been using DECwindows notes, I don't
see any

	NOTES$DEFAULTS.DAT

file in my login directory.

Perhaps if I created one with the magic incantation
in it, I could achieve more readable fonts, but it's
impossible to know what incantation to use.

If I could convince notes to make a .DAT file in the
first place, I'd have some clue as to what names
to put in front of the colons, you know, things like

	notes.read.window.font:

Any clues ? Thanks.
