I need some information regarding distributed decwindows applications and memory requirements. I am trying to defuse a situation in which I believe a customer was given bad information. Please excuse if the information is given elsewhere in this conference. I've looked briefly, but didn't find what I needed. Here goes. The customer is looking at a server and about 100 clients. The client mix will be about 67 VT1200s and 33 VS3100s. What I need is an idea of how much memory is required at the server for each DECwindows window independent of the application. For example, the 67 VT1200s will be running 3270 software on the server and displaying the output on the VT. The user may have three such windows open. The question is how much memory is required at the server for each window opened forgetting about the 3270 application itself. I need the same info for a lat VT220 connect. How much memory is required for the connect itself, independent of the application being run. Here is the way the customer thinks. He is looking at a VAX4000 for a server. He called Gartner group and they told him the average user requires 2MB of memory for each VT1200 independent of the application being run. Customer says 100 active users x 2MB = 200MB independent of the applications. Since a VAX 4000 has 128MB memory max, he concludes that two VAX 4000s may not be enough. I know this is ridiculous, but when he asked me how much memory is required, I had to punt. Can anyone help ?

> The question is how much memory is required at the server for each window > opened forgetting about the 3270 application itself. I assume that by server you mean the machine where the application will be running (VAX 4000) and not the X server. By window I assume you mean a 3270 window. The amount of memory used is 100% controlled by the application. Without an application, no windows. One application can control many windows. In other word the amount of memory used for 3270 windows is the amount of memory required by the 3270 application itself. > I need the same info for a lat VT220 connect Exactly the same amount of memory as a normal login from a terminal (for each window). Running DECterm on the VAX 4000 displaying on the VT1200 will require more memory, but since the VT1200 has a terminal emulator locally which connects via LAT this will not be neccessary. > He called Gartner group and they told him the average user requires 2MB of > memory for each VT1200 independent of the application being run. This statement is quite meaningless. Memory consumption is totally dependent on the applications being run. A DECterm window is using much less memory than a DECwrite window. However 2MB memory for an average user seems reasonable. > Customer says 100 active users x 2MB = 200MB independent of the applications. > Since a VAX 4000 has 128MB memory max, he concludes that two VAX 4000s may > not be enough. Why are you counting the 33 VS3100? Why not run the 3270 locally in the workstation? Only the VT1200 needs another machine to run the applications on. Olav |
