3207.0. "Text not displaying in windows menus" by SNOC02::WATTS () Tue Aug 14 1990 10:04

Any and all input on this problem will be greatly appreciated!

We are now at the stage where we are certain that the problem is either:

	* so ubelievably simple we are overlooking the obvious
	or
	* a real s.o.b.

We have installed Network Consultant Workbench on a VAXstation 3100. Versions
are:
	VMS 5.3
	CDD 4.2
	RDB 3.1
	DTR 5.0
	GKS 4.1
	FMS 2.4
	NETCW 1.1
	NCWSF 1.0

on a VAXstation 3100 M38, 24Mb memory, colour monitor. The GKS$WSTYPE is set
to 211. As far as we are aware, all the s/w has been installed correctly.

The symptoms are that when NETCW is started, and the graphics editor entered, a
GKS screen pops up, but while the widgets are present and can be used, there
is no text in them - sort of a way of playing "Blind Man's Bluff".

Rarely, and without an identifiable pattern, some of the pull down menus do
contain text - the primary menu bar never does.

We are trying to get this up for a DECworld Downunder demo, so we really need
answers or suggestions ASAP.

regards,
Michael Watts.

    Just a guess, Does the server have access to all the fonts that the
    application needs? If the font was missing you might get empty boxes.

3207.2Fonts seem to be there.SNOC02::WATTSWed Aug 15 1990 05:326
    Yes, we believe that the application does have access to all the fonts
    it needs, otherwise we wouldn't get text at all - very occasionally, we
    do get a pull down menu with text in it, although apparently randomnly.

	Another guess - have any odd resource files (DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT)
	laying around... In my playing with Motif, I found I could get
	*very* odd results....

3207.4Found the answer!SNOC02::WATTSThu Aug 16 1990 19:5115
    Well, we found our problem! We brought in another system disk which had
    NETcw installed and running - on comparison, the running version used
    GKS 4.0 and the dud one used GKS 4.1 - we took a back up of the system
    disk, installed 4.1, and NETcw stopped running, with the same symptom
    of no text in the widgets.

    I hereby declare a bug in GKS 4.1. In communicating with the NETcw
    folks, we discovered that they also have had this problem, and fixed it
    by reverting to V4.0

    Thanks to all who have offered suggestions, both by mail and response
    to this note.

    regards,
    Michael Watts.
