3197.0. "Problem with pause window" by FRSCS::DERKS () Mon Aug 13 1990 05:54

    Hi,

a customer of us has a problem with his VAXstation3100 VMS V5.3-1 and
    DECWindows.

If the customer pauses his station for a while, the paused window will
be opened and only the icon-box is available.
To work again on the machine he had to reboot the system.

    I think the session-manager opened the paused-window but I don't know
why and how I get out what happens in the time where the customer is
away because this problem occurs only if he paused the station.

    Regards

From your description, it is hard to tell what is happening. It
sounds like the workstation is unpausing itself but without the
user entering the correct password. Is that really the case? Are
all of the other expected applications (besides the session
manager) still running? What do you mean by "he had to reboot the
system" to work again? Is the server crashing too?

If the DECwindows server is crashing, please file a QAR that
contains the server error log file.

If a VMS DECwindows workstation is automatically unpausing itself,
this is a serious problem. A likely cause is the death of the
session manager image. One way you might try to capture information
about this is to enable image accounting, wait for the workstation
to unpause itself, and to get the image termination status from
    the accounting information.

I agree with Vince, turn on image accounting. There should also be
    some information in sys$login:decw$sm.log.

This is not a known problem, so please enter a QAR with any information
    you can gather.

Is there an idle process killer around?

It sounds like the Session Manager was killed for some reason. Since
every application was started by the Session Manager (including the
pause window), therefore, only the Icon Box was left untouched.

I don't think he needs to reboot his machine, a restart of DECWindows
    will be O.K.
