3191.0. "security redundancy?" by ULTRA::ELLIS (David Ellis) Thu Aug 09 1990 15:37

I'm confused between three different ways of registering on my Ultrix
workstation which X clients are allowed:

(1) The xhost command
(2) The sm.host_list entry in my .Xdefaults file
(3) The Customize Security menu in the Session Manager.

These do _not_ seem consistent, and (1) appears to take precedence over
(2) and (3). In addition, entries in the display in (3) sometimes are
repeated several times.

Can somebody straighten me out on all these?

xhost modifies the access list for the current session, only. Any changes
you make are not saved for the next session. The sm.host_list is preserved
between sessions. The Customize Security dialog in the session manager
is a graphical interface to sm.host_list. Save Current Settings should update
    your sm.host_list entry.

Thanks for the answers. You _have_ cleared up my confusion.

I have one question remaining. Is there any reason for the duplications in
the list of authorized hosts inside the Customize Security screen? I have
"localhost" appearing twice and my local node name three times. Other nodes
appear anywhere between two and four (!) times.

Re: .2
Sorry, I've never seen this. Could it be that your .Xdefaults file is the same?
