3175.0. "PrintScreen Sixel Bad Quality" by UTRTSC::dorland (There's always one more bug!) Tue Aug 07 1990 08:46

    Hi there,

    As you already know , printscreen with Sixel format on a LA75/LN03
    gives poor output (DecWindows V2.0). So I applied the patch
    DECWPRINT$SCREEN02_530, but this didn't help in anyway.
    Has someone experience with this patch ? Are there other things
    in PrintScreen which may improve the print quality ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ton Dorland

3175.1don't use rotate/scale image optionVMSSPT::J_OTTERSONTue Aug 07 1990 12:255
There is no way that any sixel image can be scaled without some loss in
resolution. Pixels must be added or deleted to scale. the degradation is
especially marked in trying to scale anything with text showing.

3175.2Consider giving UTOX a try for screen capturesAIRBAG::SWATKOElectrons are cheap. Trees are not.Wed Aug 08 1990 11:2424
You might consider giving UTOX a try. Among other things, UTOX can capture
screens and write them out as sixel files. I rescently tested UTOX's
performance against PrintScreen's and here are the results...

  The test machine was a VAXstation II GPX (8 plane), 16Mb VMS T5.4-4FK.
  Printer was an LJ250 running at 9600 baud. When the capture was made using
  PrintScreen, the Rotate/Scale option was turned off.

  UTOX:
	Time to capture screen and create output file:	3 minutes
	Size of resulting color sixel file: 185 blocks
	Time required to print to LJ250: 2 minutes

  PrintScreen:
	Time to capture screen and create output file:	61 minutes
	Size of resulting color sixel file: 4973 blocks
	Time required to print to LJ250: 45 minutes

  UTOX's printout even looked better than PrintScreen's.

While it is evident that PrintScreen could use some serious work, you might
want to try UTOX in the meantime.

3175.3try print_screen.exePACKER::JOHNThu Aug 09 1990 09:0212
    I use one of the print_screen utilities. I think its called
    PRINT_SCREEN.EXE This does a print protion of screen for me
    , I think you can use a qualifier to prin the whole screen or
    just window it all. This print the screen VERY quick to a file.

    The version I'm running now print to an LJ250 at about a 5" X 5"
     size. You can edit the sixel file and change 3 to 9 to get about
    a full screen. I think the authore was going to fix this to scale
    full size automaticly.

    Everyone on my cluster uses it. NOBODY uses the DECWINDOW print
    screen. It takes to long!!!

    Thanks for the replies. I will take a look at the PrintScreen with the
    rotate/scale option disabled.

 I was wondering if you got it. If yes, I would like to try it as well.
