3170.0. "DECpresent crashes DECwindows" by KHUFU::EVENSON (Don Evenson @MWO DTN 446-2470) Fri Aug 03 1990 18:38

    It seems the DECpresent folks can't be of any help on this one, maybe
    someone who knows DEcwindows can help?

    After installing DECpresent, everything works fine EXCEPT when I go to
    the "art gallery" DECwindows stops dead. I have tried reinstalling with
    no change in the problem. I can run DECpresent from another system
    (using set display /cre /etc) and use the art gallery with no problems.

    I'm running DESKtop-VMS V1.1 (V5.3-1 and V2.0). I have re-booted,
    restarted, reinstalled everything I can think of, with no luck.

    The following is the notes from the DECpresent file. Any further info
    needed send mail to KHUFU::EVENSON

Note 364.0 Art gallery crashes DECwindows 5 replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    I successfully installed 007 and everything works fine EXCEPT, if I
    select the art gallery, DECwindows crashes! I tried all kinds of other
    DECpresent functions including links to pictures and everything else
    seems to work. I'm running DESKTOP-VMS version 1.1 which is based on
    VMS 5.3 and DECwindows 2.0

    During instalation I pointed the write$clipart logicals to
    DKA300:[CLIPART]. But I've tried creating sys$sysdevice:[clipart] and
    redefining the logicals over there, same result.

    Anybody got any other ideas?

Could it be that you're running out of resources ? The default art gallery opens
up a number of vector DDIF and image DDIF pictures, they consume quite a bit of
memory. Not being a VMS expert I can't tell you what resources you need to increase
on your system. We should probably have a list of recommended resource sizes for
you to operate without such failures, I'll look into that.
Thanks,
- Ravi.

    Any chance of getting a pointer to someplace that could help get to the
    bottom of this one? I sure would like to use the art gallery. I did
    find the following log file, but noone out here in Milwaukee knows what
    it might point to...

    Don,

    The OPCODE may indicate that you didn't restart the DECwindows server
    after the installation. Did you do that?

    If you did, it might be worth asking in the DECwindows notes
    conference, BULOVA::DECWINDOWS, or possibly in the VMSNOTES conference
    on VAXWRK.

    Simon.

What is the size of the pagefile on the server machine? And what is the
pagefile quota of the process running the X server? Mine are 100000 and 40000
respectively.

    The page file on the system is 30000 and 36864 for the users. However,
    I know from experience that if the system runs out of pages, more than
    DECwindows stops!! The only thing that stops here is the window
    manager. I haven't had a chance to post anything in DECwiondows, I hope
    to get a chance next week.

Nothing that DECpresent can do should crash the server. Therefore, there is *at
least* a server bug involved here. What version of VMS/DECwindows are you
running?

3170.2Still a problem...KHUFU::EVENSONDon Evenson @MWO DTN 446-2470Mon Aug 06 1990 18:376
    Best I can tell this is VMS Version 5.3 and DECwindows Version 2.0.
    Although I did an ana/image of SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$SERVER_MAIN.EXE and it
    says version 5.3? This thing is driving me nuts! If any further details
    would help call me at DTN 446-2470 or mail KHUFU::EVENSON.

    Thanks, Don
3170.3Please submit a QARSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentMon Aug 06 1990 20:115
Any time the server crashes like this, you should immediately QAR the problem.
Whoever gets the QAR will have the expertise to analyze the server stack to
determine where the server is crashing.

See note 2 for directions on how to enter a QAR.

    Well I found the problem myself. I had installed XDPS about a month ago
    and it screwed up the mouse buttons on DECchart, so I removed XDPS and
    reinstalled DECwindows from the compact disk. However, it seems that I
    didn't remove ALL of the files that XDPS left behind. Today while
    looking for more disk space, I found them. After deleting ANYTHING that
    started with XDPS, I reinstalled DECpresent and what do you know, now
    it works perfectly!

    They should have put a big warning on XDPS saying it might mess up
    anything else!

    Guess that's the price you pay for messing with pre-release software.
    However, DECpresent is worth the price! What a great piece of software
    for anyone that does a lot of presentations.
