3164.0. "" by DSSDEV::GRIFFIN (Throw the gnome at it) Thu Aug 02 1990 14:26

We have two monochrome VAXstation 3500s, both with B&W monitors, but with
8 graphic planes (in other words, grey scale systems). One runs ULTRIX V3.1,
UWS V2.4, the other runs VMS V5.3-(something).

Both of them, when we inquire visual class, say they are color. I know for a
fact that the hardware configuration of the ULTRIX system has not changed
since installation.

Is it possible to get the correct visual class out of these systems?

Thanks,
Beth Griffin

Beth,

There is a QAR from you on this as well. The response on the QAR was
a question for you. Are you starting the server with the approp
flags for greyscale visuals?

In VMS, read SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.TEMPLATE for how to do it.
This should also be documented in the installation guide.

Re .1

I never received anything in mail saying there was an "answer" for me. To
be honest, I can't say what flags are used on the ULTRIX machine. Nothing
was touched after installation, and I would assume the installation would start
the server correctly for the workstation type.

I will check server startup on both machines.

Thanks,
Beth

The hardware for a grayscale system and a color system is the same
except for the type of monitor at the end of the cable. There is no
way to query the hardware to find out the type of monitor. That
is why you must change the site specific file.

I can't say if this fixes things for VMS (don't have access to the machine
anymore, they changed the configuration), but adding "-class GrayScale" to the
ULTRIX server startup is changing the value of the visual class. I did note
that this is NOT a documented switch in the man pages. Is it supported prior
to UWS V4.0 (as I mentioned, the system is running UWS V2.2)?

Thanks,
Beth

As I said in .2, in VMS you use DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM/TEMPLATE. The
server does not take switches.

Re: .6
Thank you for the VMS comments, but you are missing that I am interested in
ULTRIX (I can no longer access a VMS system).

And I did commit a typo: I do NOT see a change in visual class on ULTRIX
using the "-class GrayScale"; the ULTRIX machine is running UWS V2.2. Something
to note: the -class switch is not documented in the ULTRIX server man page, and
thus is not supported (according to the man page), however, I do see it if I
invoke the server with the "-help" option (which has its own problem on UWS
V4.0: "Xcfb -help" doesn't stop after displaying the usage information, it
tries to bring up the server, I know, QAR it)

Is the "-class" switch supported on ULTRIX servers prior to V4.0?

Thanks,
Beth
