3136.1 | keep hands off and let AUTOGEN do its job | PSW::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Fri Jul 27 1990 16:54 | 6 |
| I tried playing with this, myself, and I rapidly came to the conclusion that
AUTOGEN knew far better how to tune system parameters for DECwindows than I did.
Seriously. I have never been a big AUTOGEN fan (having been burnt badly by it
in its early days), but this is one case where it really works as advertised.

| I agree with you %1000. This guy, however wants to get into his
own mess and nothing I seem to say will deter him. If there is no
way to easily setup the run time parameters for the various executables
then that is an acceptable answer. (for examplles if they are set up
using a creat process system call etc..) but if there is a way to
chang ethem, I'd rather let the account determine that they are wasting
their time rather than trying to convince them of it..

| You can check with official support channels if you need an official answer.
This is the answer that I would give: a lot of performance testing and
experimentation was used to derive the parameters and formulae that AUTOGEN
uses to tune workstations. Those settings are the recommended ones and at the
very least represent a good starting-off point for any attempts at hand-tuning.

| You can look through all the startup .com's for DW and find all the
ones he can change directly. Some others probably default to pql
values on creprc, but most of the ones I've come across in source
explicitly determine the major ones. The source is available and
changing creprc params is unsupported, so wish him luck with his
independent investigations.
