3134.0. "DECwindows performance in VMS V5.4??" by BLKWDO::SCHUERER (Stev Schuerer DWT SWDistrict) Wed Jul 25 1990 15:53

I would like to know if the DECwindows performance in VMS V5.4 will be
improved over the performance in VMS V5.3?

If the performance wasn't addressed in this release, what are the plans for
looking into the performance issue?

Thank you

Any particular performance issues you have in mind? I suggest contacting
product management about your questions.

3134.2V5.4 perf similar to V5.3-1STAR::ORGOVANVince OrgovanWed Jul 25 1990 19:049
Aside from the addition of the Display PostScript capability,
the DECwindows in V5.4 is the same as V5.3-1 except for bugfixes.
There are some performance improvements specific to the SPX
graphic system in V5.4, but otherwise performance should be
    similar.

What specific aspect of the "performance issue" are you hoping
to see improved? Is it application startup time? Is it interactive
performance in tiny memory workstations? Is it drawing performance?

I have just received more information on the reduced performance issue of
DECwindows between VMS V5.2 and VMS V5.3.

The customer said they noticed reduced performance during login from main WS
screen, starting up a DECterm window, and general interactive sessions on
their VS3100's. I must tell you that these systems were purchased with only
8MB of memory, a 52MB page and swap disk, and of course, running in an LAVC.
The customer bought these systems before we had any data stating just how
limited 8MB of memory really was.

The customer also stated that they did not change any system parameters
between version changes.

We are now selling the systems with 12MB.
