3093.0. "Part Numbers for Documentation" by HILLST::MCHUGH () Wed Jul 18 1990 15:36

Can somebody please tell me the latest part numbers for the following
DECwindows documentation?

CDA Reference Manual
VMS DECwindows Device Driver Manual
VMS DECwindows Guide to Application Programming
VMS DECwindows Guide to Xlib Programming: MIT C Binding
VMS DECwindows Guide to Xlib Programming: VAX Binding
VMS DECwindows Programming Supplement
VMS DECwindows Toolkit Routines Reference Manual
VMS DECwindows Transport Manual
VMS DECwindows User Interface Language Reference Manual
VMS DECwindows Xlib Routines Reference Manual
XUI Style Guide

I am working with a customer that is evaluating a port of the their application
from the MAC to DECwindows on VMS. They are trying to get some idea of the
engineering effort involved, and I am planning to give them the above docs.
I found the above documentation in the Bookreader, but there were no part
numbers on any of the documents. I thought I hit paydirt, but I can't get the
books in the customers hands, because I don't have part numbers.

I will also accept pointers to other ways of getting the part numbers. I have
already tried VTX and was unsuccessful.

I am going to post this same note in the documentation Conference, but I don't
think that it gets as much traffic as this one.

Thanks,

Mike

All of this information is in the "Disc Contents" book on the documentation
CDROM, Table 1. The name of each book file is the order number of the book,
sometimes with a suffix. The ones you are interested in are:

CDA Reference Manual - AA-PABUA-01
VMS DECwindows Device Driver Manual - AA-MG28A-01
VMS DECwindows Guide to Application Programming - AA-MG21A-01
VMS DECwindows Guide to Xlib Programming: MIT C Binding - AA-MG24A-01
VMS DECwindows Guide to Xlib Programming: VAX Binding - AA-MG25A-01
VMS DECwindows Programming Supplement - AA-PABYA-01
VMS DECwindows Toolkit Routines Reference Manual - AA-MG23A-01
VMS DECwindows Transport Manual - AA-PABWA-01
VMS DECwindows User Interface Language Reference Manual - AA-MG22A-01
VMS DECwindows Xlib Routines Reference Manual - AA-MG26A-01
XUI Style Guide - AA-MG20A-01

This is not quite true. The file names are taken from the order numbers, but
they are not exactly the same as the order numbers. In the list in .1, the
file names all end in -01, but the order numbers actually end in -TE (or at
least most of them probably do, since that is the convention for software
documentation part numbers).

Also, I think there have been revisions to some of the manuals, and so some of
them may have "B" instead of "A" in the 5-character part of the number (the
middle part - part numbers are sometimes referred to as "2-5-2" numbers because
there are 2 characters, then 5, then 2).

Thanks for the clarification, Nina. But I did some checking and found that
at least for some of the manuals (the VAX FORTRAN documentation, for instance),
the file names matched the order numbers of the printed manuals exactly,
complete with TE suffixes. Not being in documentation, I wasn't sure if the
-01 was a new scheme or not.

I still think that the file names give you enough information to order the
paper versions, though.

Yes, the -01 is part of a new scheme, or what used to be a new scheme but is
changing, or something. There's been all sorts of fun (!) with part-numbering
for online documentation, and believe me, you don't want to know the gory (and
they are GORY) details...! :-)

The first 2 numbers and the next 5 should be the same for hardcopy and online
versions, though.

Be aware that the file-naming scheme will probably change for Bookreader V3,
and file names will probably NOT be part numbers (yay!!!!) at that time.

Here are the part numbers that you requested. I recommend that you
double check them when you order the books just to make sure.
