3092.0. "PC's & Mac's X applications" by MQOSWS::M_LEMAY (New Kid On The Block) Wed Jul 18 1990 12:12

    Hi,

Since I am pretty new to DECWindows stuff, here an easy question for
    you.

We have a prospective customer that use PC's and Mac's in schools for
teaching purposes. Some schools have only one PC or Mac. Others are
networked. And they have standardized on only one pedagogical software
for the PC's and one for the Mac's.

So, the sales rep asked me (since I am working with PC's) if it is
possible to ask those software developers to modify their applications
    to use DECWindows.

This way standalone PC's or Mac's would have the same user interface
    as those networked.

So, is there a developer's toolkit available from DEC or third-party
that would permit developing X applications for PCs and Macs? The
networked PCs and Macs will have a VMS server, but there will still be
    some stand-alone devices.

    Thanks for any comment.

    Michel

As far as I know a PC or Mac can only act as a X server and not run X client
programs (applications) locally.

A PC or MAC *could* act as a client and/or server, but TODAY all that seems
to exist are X servers for DOS-based PCs and MACs.

In the future, expect to see FULL X-11 environments:

	a) On DOS-based systems, via a product to be released near the end of
	   1990 called DESQview/X, from Quarterdeck.

	b) On OS/2 systems (very straightforward) from various sources
(maybe even from IBM and HP)

	c) On MACs running A/UX from...

SCO is already shipping FULL X-11 support for PCs running under SCO/Unix in
their Open DeskTop product.

Apple will probably never develop a full X-11 environment for their native MAC
environment for obvious reasons.

Though these environments will become available, without support from a MAJOR
Systems vendor who is REALLY interested in supporting OPEN standards and X-11,
the desktop GUI of choice will probably be won by PORTABLE Presentation Manager,
due to be released by Microsoft this winter.

Instead of the defacto standard GUI for workstations being pushed DOWN to the
PC world, where more than 90% of the intelligent desktop market resides, PM
will be pushed UP from this massive market into the very small workstation
segment, unsitting X-11 and MOTIF as THE standard GUI.

Quaterdeck is shipping *both* X server and client software for
PCs. I saw the systems at Xhibition'90.

Like I said in .2, Quarterdeck's products are not shipping yet. Though they
announced DESQview/X at Xhibition '90, and demoed it at both Xhibition '90
and PC EXPO '90, they product is just now going into ALPHA test. It will not
ship before the end of this calendar year.
