Has anyone ever tried to run DECwindows applications using a Mac equipped with eXodus (from White Plains Software) as an X terminal? I'd appriciate any pointers on such a setup. Most importantly, does all software involved work together? Andrew Eichstaedt

I haven't tried it recently myself, but I did see it in action at DEXPO east just a few weeks ago. Incidentally it is White Pine Software... They tend to be very co-operative there. Why don't you give them a call... q

We have it work here. The current version of eXodus is V2.0 which is a little bit faster than the previous verion. It also supports color. It supports both TCPIP and DECnet as transport. However, neither are bundled with the product. For TCPIP, it supports MacTCP, Community-TCPIP, and TCPort. For DECnet, it supports TSSnet. It has remote launch facility which will let you run any DECwindow applications on the host. After you buy eXodus (about $600) and one transport software (about $500), it doesn't seem very cost-effective. We have a product called LanWORKS which provide the same capability which costs much less than eXodus solution. Unfortunately, LanWORKS is still in external field test now. We are evaluating both products and I much prefer LanWORKS to eXodus. Hope this helps.

The Mac connection notes file was very helpful on this same topic a few weeks ago: RANGER::MAC_VAX_CONNECTION Some of the suggestions in the way of the problems that my customer was seeing (not able to open display): - checking the type of DECnet - TSSNET is supported - checking to see if NML is working - MC NCP TELL mac SHOW EXEC - checking to see that ethernet card is configured - by default will use 9600 baud serial line. My customer wasn't using TSSNET - was using something else that didn't exactly work... Rick Beldin |
