I tried putting this note in the SIGHT notes file, but nobody heard of this. It was suggested that I try here. -Bruce <<< VWSENG::DISK:[NOTES$LIBRARY]SIGHT.NOTE;1 >>> -< SIGHT Graphics Editor >- ================================================================================ Note 683.0 XSight??? 1 reply YIELD::HARRIS 14 lines 11-JUL-1990 10:28 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was at DECworld and they had a DECstation 5000 running software they called Xsight. The person at the booth said that Xsight was a project out of Spitbrook and that it would only run on our RISC systems. The person didn't know if there was a network kit available, so I thought I would ask here to see if anyone had heard of it and knew if it would be possible to get this software for my DECstation 3100. The software seem to do all that SIGHT does plus it has real nice coloring routines. Also on the same workstation they were running something they called MAPSKETCH. They said that this was a project out of the Paris research center. Does anyone know about this? Thanks, -Bruce

Yes, I've heard of XSight. In fact, I wrote it. It's a long way from being fully functional. Right now, there's no way to select and modify anything you've drawn. I'm planning on adding this capability, and a few other things (eg, LiveLinks from DECwrite, DECpresent) and putting a kit on the net by the end of August. If anyone needs a copy before that, I do maintain a mailing list for new baselevels, which come out about once a week or so. These are available on the net, and, as stated, only run on RISC workstations. It also requires Display PostScript on the server device. Send mail to SARAH::P_DAVIS to be added to the list. MapSketch is another graphics editor. Both MapSketch and XSight are using some technology developed at the Paris Research Lab called "MapKernel." What this does is allow you to store graphics primitives (lines, curves, ellipses, etc.) in a graphics object called a planar map. In an ordinary DECwrite (or Mac Draw) type graphics editor, each thing you draw is a separate entity. In MapKernel, you can join all these together into a single object, fill in enclosed regions, remove individual edges, etc. For more information about MapSketch, contact Jean-Manual Van Thong (DECPRL::JMVT) or Chris Weikart (DECPRL::WEIKART) at the Paris Research Lab. -pd
3084.2 | AN "Xsight" is already shipping... | SPCTRM::GORCZYCA | Tue Jul 17 1990 13:25 | 9
Be aware that there is already an X-11 server product being sold today with the same name...Xsight...actually, it's a registered trademark of Locus Computing Corp. PC Xsight is a DOS application that is also an X-11 server. John

That's ok. XSight is just a working title. If this ever becomes a product, the real name will probably be something ugly and non-descriptive. |
