3031.0. "Memory Allocation/Deallocation ??" by SUBWAY::BUONOMO () Tue Jul 03 1990 13:08

    HI,

Being new to DECwindows and having a customer developing
with it I have been presented with a question that I can not
        answer....

I seems that the VAX 3100 workstation and the VT1000 terminal
need to be rebooted when a lot of window activity ( add, remove,
    	cut & paste...) is done.

The customer tells me is has to do with memory allocation and
    	deallocation.

and the VT1000 has a little monitor that tells you to reboot !!!

Is this a known bug ???

    							Thanks,
    							Lou Buonomo

Re: .0

There is a problem in DECterm where when you create and delete a lot of DECterm
windows over time eventually DECterm will run out of memory and probably crash
(in which case all your DECterm windows will disappear). When this happens,
though, you shouldn't have to reboot; in most cases all you have to do is
create more DECterm windows and DECterm will automatically restart itself.

What you seem to be saying, though, is that DECwindows as a whole leaks memory.
I wonder if there might be a leak in the server?

The VT1000 is similar to DECwindows but different: the VT1000 developers used
the DECwindows server code as a starting point but made their own
modifications.
