3022.0. "Automatic Session Login?" by VANDAL::LOVELL (Kiwi Provenal) Sun Jul 01 1990 14:21

There have been several notes in the past on this topic, but none with a
satisfactory response - so in the interest of solving the riddle, I'll
ask afresh ;

	How can I effect an "auto-login" to DECwindows?

I have a VAXstation at home in my study. Security is of little concern. I am
the only user ever. I would like to simply power on the station and come back
in 15 minutes to find my station has auto-booted and DECwindows has somehow
performed an auto-login, causing default DECwindows session (Fileview,
n x DECterm, Bookreader, etc..) all up and running.

I believe that some customers also have this sort of requirement, to bypass
the normal DECwindows Username/Password and fall straight into a tailor made
"application login".

Suggestions Please,
/Chris.

I believe there's some working in progress to allow this
sort of thing. I'm not sure when it will make it onto the
VMS kit but stay tuned...

BTW, why do you have to wait 15 minutes?

    Because some of us have old hardware with little memory.

3022.3Who needs a session manager anyway?PEACHS::BELDINThu Jul 12 1990 15:4711

	You could try just starting up the server (@DECW$STARTUP SERVER,LIBS)
	and then running the session manager... BUT, I just tried this
	and keep getting it SYSTEM-F-BADPARM... Fyi, you can run the
	window manager with the login box on the screen - kind of an
	interesting effect... Tried running DECW$STARTSM.COM but had
	the same problem... Why not just fire off a few decterms and
	apps from startup - do you really use the session manager?

3022.4Another similar suggesion...IO::MCCARTNEYJames T. McCartney III - DTN 381-2244 ZK02-2/N24Thu Jul 12 1990 17:0723

	I was thinking about using the same solution to get everything
	started but then there's the problem of how to communicate where
	decw$display is. That's probably what's causing your bad param msg.

	I don't remember how it actually is done. I knew once, had to do
	with sys$error and some black magic in $CREPRC but I can't find it.
	Perhaps the session manager people can tell us...

	One idea, again not starting the APPS, would be to

	submit/user=<username> my_start_sm.com

	which would contain commands to run both the decw$login.com and
	then run the session manager. Might also have to run the window
	manager, haven't tried it. Bad news is that the session manager
	would be running in batch. Also don't know if it works.

	If I find the message saying how DECW$DISPLAY gets started, it would
	be possible to severly hack things to replace DECW$STARTLOGIN.EXE.

Thanks for all suggestions. I tried these - there seems to be some extreme0
black magic performed for the session manager which does not conform to our
normal way of thinking (VMS processes etc...)

I can get DECterms up automatically but they won't iconify because there's
no Session Manager. I've tried many ways to get an auto session manager but the
only way that I've managed is to set my user account /NOPASS and have trained
my 3 year old son to stand guard and to type in the family name once he sees
the " d i g i t a l" logo.  (Means that I continue watching the news on TV till
the station is ready for use)

There Must be a better way,
Chris.

The thing you're missing (for iconification) isn't the session manager, it's the
window manager. You should be able to fire that up at the same time as starting
the decterms. Use the command RUN DECW$WINMGREXE.
