3017.0. "Problems running DECW$TAILOR - files not deleted!
" by BLKPUD::PAGEH (Howard Page - Warrington UK.) Fri Jun 29 1990 06:16
Hi. (I've put this note in the VMSNOTES conference as well)
I have a problem with DECW$TAILOR. My customer's system disk is getting full
and she wanted to save some space. She had installed decwindows with VMS but
has never used it since she only has terminals.
I got her to run decw$tailor and it seemed to run OK. We answered the questions
as follows:-
Tailor OFF, ALL classes, Entire classes and finally YES to remove all classes.
This seemed to go OK with the exception of a handfull of files it couldnt find.
However when it got to the reboot the system bit the customer did control-Y
since she didnt want to shut the system down! At this point no disk space had
been recovered. She shut the system down later thinking this would finish the
tailor off. However this didnt give her any space back either. Anal/disk/rep
didn't either. When she looked at several of the decwindows files with DIR
they all appeared to still be there.
At this point she ran through DECW$TAILOR again, only this time it complained
about every file not being there implying they had been deleted last time!
However she let it run all the way through to reboot. Again no space returned.
Can anybody explain to me exactly how decw$tailor works and maybe why it
didnt for my customer..... Is it OK to delete the files manually - I've found
a list in the V5.2 installation guide appendix C.
She is running VMS V5.3 on a 3400
Thanks for any help,
Howard.

| I find this condition unexplainable. Shutdown has vary little to do
with the files being deleted. It really unlocks "installed" images
that where deleted. The files are deleted as they are processed
in the tailor off process.
You might want to do an ANAL/DISK and see if there are problems.
About the only other thought I have is that someone did something
that affected the directory [000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR. The directory
[SYSn]SYSCOMMON.DIR is an alias (SET FILE/ENTER) to VMS$COMMON.
You might want to do a DUMP/HEAD/BLOCK=COUNT=0 of both these
directory files and see if anything suspicious is displayed.
