I'm having significant problems getting started with dxdb on a PMAX. I'm running Ultrix 3.1D and UWS 2.2. I'm using dxterm and have set the appropriate resource in my .Xdefaults as well as /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Db. 1) When I dxdb the diroll example while logged into the superuser acct IN EITHER AN XTERM OR DXTERM WINDOW everything runs fine. When I hit run a new dxterm starts up for the program output. 2) When I dxdb the diroll example while logged into my personal account IN A DXTERM WINDOW, dxdb starts up ok. Then when I hit run it immediately crashes with the message "dxdb: fatal error: Couldn't start slave xterm". 3) When I dxdb the diroll example while logged into my personal account IN AN XTERM WINDOW, dxdb starts up ok. Then when I hit run it starts up a dxterm window and runs properly! All three cases were running in my personal account using a copy of the diroll stuff from /usr/examples/dxdb. A number of people have been telling me to bag dxdb because it's too buggy. I'd rather not do that, but I'm beginning to believe they are right. Any suggestions what I've got messed up? Is there any dxdb documentation available? Please don't give me nebulous pointer to GURU::. I was unable to find anything there on dxdb. Is there a notesfile somewhere for dxdb? Is it a supported product? help!??! - steve mcafee

Well, I've fixed the problem (although I don't know why exactly the fix works). I duplicated the superuser path in my personal account and that fixed it. I then appended to the path all of the things which were in my old path but not the superuser path and it still worked. Also I moved the set path from .login to .cshrc. One of these two things fixed the problem. I'm still interested in finding out about dxdb documentation and support status. Also does dxdb work with languages other than C? - steve | |||||

Dxdb is a supported product but currently there is no developement on the product. I was the only person on the project and I've moved on to other stuff. I haven't done any work on it except bug fixes in over a year. You probably should contact product management for CASE for suggestions and requirements for debugging tools. -dave- |
