I have a question on DECwindows when I first login into the systems account. What happens is when the Fileview window first appears, I should be able to see the directory of files. Well, needless to say, I don't see the directory of and on the front a small window appears with the following message; Fileview - Message Some file information could not be collected because of the following file search error File Specification syntax error I have checked my login.com and sylogin.com and neither seems to be causing the problem. I have had this problem for quite some time now. In order to see the directory of files I need to open a DECterm window. Does anybody have any idea, what might be causing this problem? Thanks in advance for any support you might furnish. Robert P.S. I don't get this error message when logging into the users account.

2938.2 | Login device is a search list? | LOWELL::KLEIN | Fri Jun 15 1990 16:59 | 10
It sounds like the system account's default device is defined (in the UAF file) to be a logical name that equates to a search list of devices. When you're logged into the system account, do a $SHOW DEFAULT. Check the device name. Do a $SHOW LOGICAL of the device name and see if it is a search list. If so, try defining the logical with the /TRAN=CONC switch. Even this is not really supported but it should work. -steve-
2938.3 | Here is more info. I found while trying to fix the problem. | BEBE::GALLEGOS | Mon Jun 18 1990 11:08 | 32
After I get the message on the screen and acknowledge the message, then select the apply command with the mouse on the Fileview window. At is time I get a different message and that is; FILEVIEW - MESSAGE Same file information could not be collected because of the following file search error; Error in device name or in appropriate device type for operation After I acknowledge this message, I then get some information on the File Filter section and that is; File Filter |, RMS attributes: None, Journaling enables: None, File protection: Sy After I remove information from the File Filter section and go back to the apply, then the directory of files appear. I have set the protection on all files in the systems account to world and group accessible, along with owner and system. All other information,. such as to what appears on the Directory field seems to be working as it should. I hope this information helps and if not, please let me know. Thanks, Roberto
2938.4 | Trash in Startup view | LOWELL::KLEIN | Tue Jun 26 1990 17:43 | 7
Now it sounds like your Startup view has trash in the FileFilter field. After fixing up your window so that you can see your files, pick SaveStartupView from the Customize menu. This will re-save your startup view with a blank FileFilter field and it should work fine the next time you start up FileView. -steve- |
