2911.1 | File protection problems | STAR::ORGOVAN | Vince Orgovan | Tue Jun 12 1990 19:01 | 9 |
| Check the file protections on these files:
decw$system_defaults:vue$master.uid
decw$system_defaults:decw$mail_send.uid
vue$library:*
They should be world-readable. How did you do the installation?
Did you do anything to tighten security on your system after
installation?

2911.2 | DECwindows: Protection/Installation
| SCOTTY::CONNELL | | Wed Jun 13 1990 15:45 | 20 |
|
The protection is as follows:
Directory SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.SYSTEM]
VUE$MASTER.UID;1 (RWED,RWED,RWED,RE)
DECW$MAIL_SEND.UID;1 (RWED,RWED,RWED,RE)
Total of 2 files.
As for the installation, I did it through the VMS V5.3 installation
procedure.
As for security, I just followed the VMS V5.3 installation process.
Regards,
Mike :-)

2911.3 | Using language switching? | STAR::ORGOVAN | Vince Orgovan | Wed Jun 13 1990 19:56 | 3 |
| Have you by any chance used the session manager to customize
your language selection? If so, DECwindows will use a different
search path to lookup the .UID files.

2911.4 | Session Manager
| SCOTTY::CONNELL | | Thu Jun 14 1990 18:35 | 15 |

I never touched the modified the language selection of the Session
Manager. This is happening throughout the entire cluster with all
users.
Again, users just acknowledge the error and then continue to work.
As for mail, when they try CREATE/SEND a message, they receive the
message I outlined in the original note.
Should I modify the language selection of the Session Manager?
Regards,
Mike :)

| I don't understand what is happening here, but something is
broken with your system/installation. Lots of clusters have
done the same upgrade and none have reported problems like this.
I'd concentrate on the mail problem since that message is
completely clear. The DECwindows mail image cannot open the
file decw$system_defaults:decw$mail_send.uid. Maybe the
definition of decw$system_defaults is getting stepped on,
maybe there is a file protection problem, or maybe one of the
directories in the path to the .uid file has a problem.
