2877.0. "DW Idle process killer." by SALEM::NAGARAJAN () Tue Jun 05 1990 10:51

    Hi!

    I am looking for an idle process killer that can terminate the session
    manager and log out a completely from a DECW session. I hear that
    ZAP kills the DW terminals but not the session manager. And that
    Spirit is outdated and does not do 5.x. We are running 5.3-1 of
    VMS.

    Any pointers will be greatly appreciated!

    Regards

	Wouldn't it be better to educate people? I don't think there is a good
	solution to this..

2877.2Think about the problem before you try to "fix" it!IO::MCCARTNEYJames T. McCartney III - DTN 381-2244 ZK02-2/N24Wed Jun 06 1990 00:3319

The problem is that an idle session manager doesn't mean you've got an idle
workstation! I've not touched my session manager all day, thus I expect that
it's done very little! Now if you start killing idle session manager processes
you'll probably get a high percentage of users which were using a decterm for
extended periods of time. I predict they'll be very ****ed when you drop
their session.

<flame on>

Idle process monitors are such STUPID things! Idle processes don't consume
resources unnecessarly. If VMS really needs the memory, idle processes are
the first to get out-swapped - remember swapping - VMS still does that quite
well!

    But what is the intend of an IPM ? Is it to save resources, or to
    improve security ? I agree with the previous replies, please, don't use
    an IPM for saving resources.
    If it is a matter of security, then the ONLY thing to do with
    DECwindows (and MOTIF) is to pause the workstation after a certain
    amount of inactivity (keyboard & mouse). How does the screen saver
    works ? Use the same principle, lock the workstation, and let the user
    use his password again when he'll come back. This will cover a fair
    number of cases. Monitor screens are another issue.

    Such application has been posted in the DW_EXAMPLES notesfile. It works
    quite nicely, I couldn't use it daily because of dual-screen problem,
    and VMS version too. But I wish I could.
    I wish too that DECwindows developers have got eyes open enough to read
    me, and implement a damn good feature.

    Pierre.
    PS:
    You'll spend more time/money to educate your users rather than developing
    an auto lock screen system.

        If someone has three decterms up on his workstation, and he doesn't
	use one of them for a while, he wouldn't want that process to be blown
	away, or his workstation (by either stopping SM or by locking the
	screen, either.)

	An Idle Process does not an Unattended Display make.

	Maybe DECwindows will convince someone?
