Hello Decwindows users, We have a strange problem here in Switzerland at the EPFL site. On a VS3100 served by a 8530 (VMS 5.2 DECw. 1.0), after a certain amount of time (lets say half a day) with nobody interactively logged on the station, the first trying to login get a black screen just after entering his password. And the process hang. Doing a show system via decnet show no WSAx process. What we done: -checking all sysgen parameters, -autogenerated the system, -checking all (decw$)(sy)login.com... We have also noted this problem at the same site on an other LAVC (780,3200, 3100). For some reason this customer don't want to upgrade to V5.3/2.0 now. Does anybody see such a problem in an other place ? Any help would be very appreciated ! Thanks in advance. Jean-Luc Rossier (SSG-St-Sulpice)

Is there a server process? What state is it in? (HIB, LEF, etc)? Have you tried ^F2 to make sure there is no operator window. Are you sure it has nothing to do with screensaver? Burns

Hi, Finally I receive the following answer from Paris: (from the STARS database - an article that I miss...) SUBJECT: At login time, the cursor is blinking by default. The process _WSAn that displays the DIGITAL logo and the banner for USERNAME & PASSWORD will consume CPU time and thus can die when it expires the UAF quota CPUTIME. DESCRIPTION: In order to avoid this effect, you can disable the blinking of the cursor by editing the DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS:DECW$LOGIN.DAT and adding this line: *blinkRate : 0 The process _WSAn will no longer consume its CPU time. Hope this help, Dung HOANG C/S Support FRANCE I apply this fix and that works fine! Thank you everybody ! Jean-Luc Rossier (SSG-St-Sulpice)

Sounds like a bug: the login procedure should not be subject to the CPU limit. paul |
