2837.0. "FileView crashes symbols?" by FRSCS::ERLEMANN (Bedman strikes back) Wed May 30 1990 10:41

    Hi,
another strange behavior encountered by a customer of mine.

    He does the following:

    	1. creates a DCL .com file where he defines some global
    	   symbols
    	2. builds further a new menu in FileView with the verbs
    	   a) the mentioned DCL procedure and b) another
procedure from which a text processing image 'TEX' is
started. This image needs several symbols which have
been defined in the first verb.
    	3. after finishing this he clicks on the first verb in
the new menu. After this he clicks on the second verb-
    	   everything's fine.
    	4. after finishing this image he starts it again after a
    	   time - everything's fine again.
    	5. finally - after having a 'Utilities'->'DCL Command'
started (where all the previous activated images are
still alive and known) and then activating the text
image again, this image dies with %DCL_W_UNDSYM,
undefined symbol... and you can nevermore activate
    	   this image!

Now the customer's of the opinion that this is caused by
    VMS/DECwindows. - Is he right?

    Thanks...

    	Armin

I don't believe that FileView makes any guarantee that successive
commands operate in the same environment. Specifically, FileView uses
multiple subprocesses for executing VERBs and for DCL command windows.
Thus your customer is making an incorrect assumption about the fact
that the symbols are defined in the process in which he will invoke
    TEX.
