2813.1 | You should be able to do it | SMURF::COUTU | He who will not risk, cannot win. | Thu May 24 1990 18:33 | 11 |
| If you have an RD54 (or two or three!) you can install UWS on your MV
II system and have it display on a VMS or ULTRIX workstation. (UWS is
DECwindows.) You will also need at least 8Mb of memory for it to be
workable. (You can perhaps skimp by with less but I wouldn't recommend
that to someone not familiar with ULTRIX and UWS.)
UWS is not available on the net. ULTRIX is bound by royalty agreements
with AT&T and so we must track (by licensing) every system which
installs it. You'll have to order it through SSB.

2813.2 | DECsystem 3100 and VT1000 - decwindows? | BAHTAT::ALDERTONM | Malcolm Alderton @LZO 845-2181 | Wed Jun 13 1990 14:15 | 32 |
| I too have a similar problem.
A customer has just bought a DECsystem 3100 and some VT1000's.
Initially he will only want to use the VT1000 for multiple terminal
windows.
However, he eventually (in the next few months) will want to run
windowed applications on the 3100 and display onto the vt1000's.
My questions are:
a) can the DECsystem 3100 act provide Xsession manager in the way that
VMW 5.3 with Decwindows V2 can to the VT1000. DO we have to wait for DW
V2 on Ultrix?
B) Can I install UWS V2.1 on the 3100? Will this enable me to run
a windowed application on the 3100 and display on the vt1000?
c) What can I do now?
d) Is is supported ?
I know how to do B and C from a Workstation but have never tried it
from a timesharing system.
Any help appreciated as I have to see the customer next tuesday!

| RE .2
You can find some answers on the Notesfile MARVIN::VT1000.
However, here are some replies to your requests :
a) The DECsystem 3100 doesn't provide any way to get a X session
in the same way as does VMS DECwindows. Waht you have to do is :
First, determine an IP adress for the VT1000 known by
the DECSYSTEM.
From the VT1000, create a Telnet window to the DECsystem.
Redirect the display to the VT1000 by
% setenv DISPLAY VT1000_IP_ADRESS:0
Then, run your X application
Hope this help,
