2799.0. "Can't start File View and DECterm" by SORGEN::MICHAEL () Tue May 22 1990 04:34

Hi,

After the upgrade to VMS 5.3 and Decwindows 2.0 a customer can't start
File View and DECterm windows from the session manager. He gets the message
'Starting file view' and 'Starting DECterm', but they never appear.
SHOW SYSTEM shows no process.
We increased GBLSECTIONS from 300 to 400 and 600, and GBLPAGES to 30000
and 50000. No success.

There is no INQUIRE in sylogin.com or login.com.
We defined the logicals to get logfiles from the File View or DECterm, but
without success. Pool parameter are o.k.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

2799.1Bypass your login files.UTRTSC::CAHILLTue May 22 1990 04:519
    The most obvious thing is your login stuff,have you tried bypassing
    your sylogin and login files altogether,I would try that first and
    then you can at least rule out your login files.
    There has been a change in the way DECwindows starts applications in
    V2.0,something to do with the session manager writing commands to
    mailboxes,I'm not sure of the details but I am sure someone else with
    more knowledge on the subject will give you more information.

Yes, rename your login files. That is by far the #1 cause of this problem.

Another suggestion is to enable accounting and look at the exit status of the
processes.

There is a lenghty note in this conference about how the session manager starts
processes.
