2785.0. "Font file types Incompatibility" by FORTSC::SHOMO () Thu May 17 1990 15:49

    A customer has a DS3100/UWS 2.2 loaded with Lucid Common LISP V3.0.
    They are apparently haveing a problem with incompatible font file
    types. UWS only supports .PCS and Lucid's product requires .SNF.
    Anyone know the history and/or alternatives to resolve this.
    The customer stated an earlier UWS use to support .SNF, but DEC
    changed during the Lucid porting process. I'm not familiar with the
    font loading process, but sounds like a miscommunication between
    vendors with the customer getting squeezed.

    Any thoughts!

The .pcf and .snf formats are compiled font files. The source form
(defined by MIT) is the .bdf format. The .snf format does not contain
sufficient information for the Display PostScript extension in UWS2.2,
so UWS2.2 X servers only support the .bdf and .pcf formats. Users
wishing to compile their .bdf fonts to the .pcf format can use the dxfc
utility. To avoid problems, DEC encourages vendors to ship their fonts
in the .bdf format. There is no way to upgrade a .snf format file to .pcf format.

2785.2Did UWS2.(n-1) ship .snf file formats?FORTSC::SHOMOThu May 17 1990 19:518
    Thanks for the quick response. Did we ship the .snf file formats with
    an earlier version of UWS and if so is it worth trying to dump onto
    tape and bring to customer until this situation can be resolved with
    vendor?

    Thx again

Yes, UWS2.1 and UWS2.0 did use .snf fonts. These will not be useful
with a UWS2.2 X server, though.
