| Sounds like your rgb database might be corrupted. This will tell you if it is:
sum /usr/lib/X11/rgb*
26114 36 /usr/lib/X11/rgb
00254 4 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.dir
64060 8 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.pag
63948 7 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt
You might want to consider getting new bits. If you don't feel like installing
a new version, getting the rgb database from another machine will also work.

| Ok, the checksums are different. I do plan to upgrade
to the new ULTRIX V4.0 bits when they get released.
I wonder if I can extract those files from the original
tapes. Those are tar formats, aren't they?
47133 60 /usr/lib/X11/rgb
08141 4 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.dir
15169 3 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.pag
14378 4 /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt
thanks,

| The server in the distant past has been known to corrupt the rgb database with
the result that colors disappear. I don't know if this was a problem in 2.1.

| To answer the question, though, run fverify on the server subset. fverify
should mark the subset as corrupt, as shown by setld -i. If that happens, then
you should be able to reinstall. If not, remove the lock file associated with
the server subset and reinstall it. The lock file is
/usr/etc/subsets/<subset name>.lk.

2755.5 | rgb.dir was the problem | OVRDRV::BEIKMAN | Steve Beikman | Wed May 16 1990 13:31 | 16 |
| Ok, I got it now. The rgb.dir file got corrupt somehow.
I got a lesson in fverify. The upgrades do not update
the old .inv files I discovered. When I ran the fverify
on the UDWX11020 stuff, I got lots of errors. When I ran
it on the UDWX11021 install, I got an error on 'rgb'
because I had changed the protection codes on it. I then
looked closer at how the fverify worked. That's when I
discovered the sum of rgb.dir was bad. That file was not
updated in the 2.1 upgrade. So, one has to consider if
upgrades have been applied when using fverify. I found
a copy of rgb.dir, installed, rebooted, and now everything
works like I expect. yea!
Thanks for you help Jeff.
