2665.0. "VS3100 w/ SPX oddities..." by PEACHS::BELDIN () Thu Apr 26 1990 10:38

We have a vs3100 with spx and a vrt19 monitor. I have noticed some
oddness about its behavior relative to other vaxstations/monitor
	combos:

	- the pause window password prompt is not centered on the screen

	- several programs that work well on other workstations give a
lot of X errors - notably XAQUARIUM (large fish) - instead of
fish - square blocks and a red screen - the bubbles come up
ok though... I'll trap the errors and post them.

	- occasionally when Quiting the Session Manager, the server will
die. No indication of what the problem is in the
DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG - it just ends with:

        25-APR-1990 14:06:06.7 Client 3 resets the server

This is VMS 5.3-1 in a LAVC, 16meg.... Any ideas?

regarding the centering: Do you have the system set up as 100 dpi (using
DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM (see *.TEMPLATE for instructions)?

	Will check...

Also, the Xaquarium problem was found to be in the hacked version
that I had - it was hacked for a 4-plane machine.

The server crashes are still around, random, seemingly after periods
	of heavier use...

2665.3Any more on server crash ? Seeing it here also.YZR500::OMELEYAnd now for something completely different...Fri May 25 1990 00:4547
    Hi,
regarding the DECW server crashing on a VS3100 SPX, I have
customer that is seeing exactly the same problem. It doesn't happen
everytime the user quits a session but the frequency of the failure is
related to how often they quit (ie: many quits = many failures... few
quits = few failures). They have been using Pause to get around the
problem but are keen for a solution to the problem. The customer is a
very large organisation and this problem is occuring on machines in
a high profile research department (Geology).

below is an extract of the server log file, and the following reply is
    output from DECW$setver_0_output.log.

2665.5Please submit a QARSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentFri May 25 1990 12:3314
Please submit a QAR on this problem as suggested in the log file itself.
That way you can be sure that the SPX developer will see this problem.
Directions for filing QARs are in note #2.

Note to all posters of (possible) bugs in this notes file: please indicate
in your notes whether or not you have already submitted a QAR or SPR.
Nothing is more frustrating to developers to hear through the grapevine
that a customer has a "very serious problem", and yet find that not one
single QAR or SPR has been sent in on the subject!

For those of you worried about submitted duplicate problem reports: if
the problem is definitely a bug (and server crashes are ALWAYS bugs),
go ahead and submit the QAR. If the problem is a duplicate, we will
simply note it and tell you which release has the fix.

It turns out that this one is most likely already fixed. The symptom we know
about is that the SPX server dies after some number of logouts, and especially
after running a big program.

The fix is in V5.4, and is also available as a patch worldwide from the various
support centers.

However, if you don't have access to V5.4 or this patch (so that you can find
out for sure if this fixes the problem), I agree with the previous posters:
QAR.

Hi,
I did some chaseing down and found the following. The patch name is
DECWSESSION$PATCH03_053.A na dis available on the VOID system so the CSC's do
have it available. They might not know it but it's there.

Take care,

Dan Eaton

The only thing is, I *think* it may really be DECWSERVER..., not DECWSESSION.
I'm trying to confirm that now.

To be exact, I'm running VMS T5.4-4GE. I received a copy of the

T5.4 is not V5.4. T is the field test version which actually shipped at about
the same time as V5.3-1. It undoubtedly has the same bug as V5.3-1. You need
either V5.3-1 with patch, or the latest and greatest version of 5.4. I'm not
what is available for 5.4 on the net. I assume that there is a pre-SDC version
somewhere that is newer than T5.4.

2665.12I believe the latest DECwindows is not in -4GE...LNKUGL::BOWMANBob Bowman, CSC/CS SPACE TeamFri Jun 01 1990 11:267
The latest VMS available to general EASYnet sites is T5.4-4GE, referenced in
.10.

I suspect this was built before the date I have seen for the final DECwindows
build/integration, so the latest DECwindows fixes most likely will not be
available until we see an SSB kit (or perhaps a pre-SSB check-out kit) later
this summer.

So what do I do in the mean time? I don't like to reboot my systems 5
times a day and I don't want to hear "roll back to V5.3-1".

2665.14the patch you need is DECWSERVER$PATCH02_053VMSSG::LEMBREEJust do it.Tue Jun 05 1990 12:344
The patch that fixes the SPX hang is available from any CSC, and can be
referenced by asking for DECWSERVER$PATCH02_053. The patch mentioned earlier
in this note (DECWSESSION$PATCH03_053 or something) fixes an entirely different
problem, and should not be used in attempts to fix server hangs.
2665.15CSC knows it as CSCPAT_0183CSC32::M_MURRAYThu Jun 07 1990 16:257
RE: .l4

You will have better luck if you ask the CSC for CSCPAT_0183, which has
DECW$SERVER$PATCH02_053 included in it.

Cheers,

I'm in ZK. How many people know how to contact the CSC? We don't
pay for support. I don't have their 1-800 number. Just how in the
heck do internal people get these things?

When will there be a version of 5.4 released that has this fix in it?

I tore apart patch 183 and applied it manually to my 5.4 system. Now I
only hang the SPX when I logout. Logging in is fine.

FWIW, a kind soul supplied me with the latest (SPX related)
    SYS$LIBRARY:DECW$SERVER_*.EXE files. I haven't had a single crash or
hanging in over 24 hours of use! That's super compared to 3 a day
    prior.

I am with Sales Support, and my customer just got a bunch of VAXstation
3100s with VMS V5.3-1 and the SPX boards. We got CSCPAT_0183.A from
the CSC, and attempted to apply it.

The patch failed, complaining that it could not find the file
VMI$ROOT:[SYSLIB]DECW$SERVER_DDX_GE.EXE. I called the CSC, and they
said that the file should be on the 'B' saveset, and to simply copy
it into my system from the saveset, and re-attempt the patch.

Ok, fine, I can try that. But I now have little confidence that simply
fetching that file will materially affect the situation. What else is
needed that isn't present? Why does the system run correctly without
that file? Has anyone else run into this? How did we get ourselves into
this state? Did we screw up the installation of VMS? Did we get a bad kit?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

2665.21VMI$ROOT is a VMS install artifact not a production directory...IO::MCCARTNEYJames T. McCartney III - DTN 381-2244 ZK02-2/N24Mon Jul 16 1990 17:337
The file may actually be in the directory:

sys$common:[SYSLIB]DECW$SERVER_DDX_GE.EXE

since this is the place that it must be for normal operation.

I don't know why the patch failed though.

Yes.

The VMS kit and the patch are fine. Sorry for the false alarm.

In installing the VMS V5.3-1 upgrade, the customer went a little berserk
with DECW$TAILOR, and deleted lots of stuff that he shouldn't have. When
we re-built the system from scratch, choosing the correct options in
DECW$TAILOR, the patch installed correctly and everything runs fine.
