2664.0. "EXQUOTA error when DECNET transport is used." by TAV02::GAN () Thu Apr 26 1990 08:31

One of our customers has a DECWINDOWS application (VMS 5.3)
which uses RDB. The application works fine until it is used
in DECNET transport (even in the local station but with
SET DISPLAY/CREATE/NODE=0/TRANSPORT=DECNET). In that case
it fails after a while with the X I/O error followed by a
EXQUOTA error message. It do NOT happens if LOCAL transport
is used or RDB is not used.

I've checked all process quotas, including BYTLM,BIOLM,
ENQLM,PAGEFILEQUOTA etc. Everything is very very high. Looking
from another session using SHOW PROCESS/QUOTA/ID=xxx shows no
remaining quota going down and everything looks fine. Just the
EXQUOTA error continuing...

So I suspected that it is the DECW$SERVER_0 that has quota problem,
I've asked the customer to temporarily modify the DECW$STARTSERVER.COM
and raise the server process BYTLM from 50000 to 200000 and BIOLM
from 60 to 200, and restart the server. Nothing changed.

What can cause that error? Does it come from the server side
or it is an application quota problem? How can it be eliminated?
Any help will be appreciated.

	Thanks in advance

2664.1EXQUOTA is on the application sideSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentThu Apr 26 1990 13:595
Any EXQUOTA errors will be on the application side. The X protocol has
no way of transmitting VMS-type errors from the server to the application.

Unfortunately, with EXQUOTA errors it really is a guessing game as to
which quota is being exceeded.

Does either the customer's application or RDB disable resource waits?
If they are disabled, then it is possible that DECnet would return
    EXQUOTA during transmission.

2664.3I'll check and give here the results.TAV02::GANSun Apr 29 1990 03:518
I'll check if it a resource wait problem.
It will take 2 days to get the answer, since it is
    holiday now.

Many thanks for .1 and .2 for their answers.
I'll let you know what are the results.

2664.4It is ASTLM. But how can it be avoided?TAV02::GANWed May 02 1990 10:2117
I've found the cause for that EXQUOTA error message:
It was the ASTLIMIT that exhausted. Raising the AST quota
from 100 to 3000 seems to eliminate the problem for most
of the time. The problem is that the remaining quota
of AST is getting eaten very fast, when you move the
mouse a lot. That happen even if the application use DECNET
transport in the local VAXSTATION. When LOCAL transport
is used, the remaining AST quota do not change at all!!!

What could be the reason for that AST amount used by DECNET
transport, and is there a workaround to avoid it? (even when
ASTLM is 3000, moving the mouse for more then 2 minutes continuously
causes all AST quota to be eaten and the application crashes
with EXQUOTA error).

2664.5Please submit a QARSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentWed May 02 1990 15:003
Something doesn't sound right here. We fixed the DECwindows transport
to use less ASTs in VMS V5.3, not more. I don't know why your ASTs
aren't being serviced. I suggest submitting a QAR.

Are you sure your customer is using VMS V5.3?

2664.7It is VMS 5.2TAV02::GANThu May 03 1990 02:0412
Sorry that I did not mention it in
previous note. The customer is using
VMS 5.2. He gave me wrong info on his
current version, which I discovered
only when I came to his site to find
the reason for the EXQUOTA problem.

So if it is fixed under VMS 5.3, then
I'll advise him to upgrade.

Many Mant thanks for your help
