2609.0. "incomplete decwindows" by SUCCES::BURTON () Fri Apr 13 1990 10:51
Could anyone shed some light on this problem I'm having?
Yesterday I had 4mb of mem installed in a workstation II GPX. This
gives me a total of 13mb memory. When I re-booted I didn't get the
DEC logo and usename window. Just a gray screen with arrow.
The DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG contains the following,
13-APR-1990 07:50:34.1 Hello, this is the X server
Dixmain address=13074
Now attach all known txport images
%DECW-I-ATTACHED, transport DECNET attached to its network
%DECW-W-ATT_FAIL, failed to attach transport LAT
-SYSTEM-F-PRIVINSTALL, shareable images must be installed to run
privileged ima
in SetFontPath
out SetFontPath
GPX color/monochrome support loaded
gpx$InitOutput address=114c10
Connection Prefix: len == 42
13-APR-1990 07:51:50.0 Now I call scheduler/dispatcher
With the exception of new memory nothing else has been changed and
it ran fine (although slow) before.
I also got an invalid "if then else statement" error when the
DECW$STARTLIBS.COM ran. This was at the following line,
$ if f$search("cda$library:defstyle.ddif") .nes. ""
$ then if f$trnlnm("ddif","rms$semantic_tags") .nes. f$file_attributes -
("cda$library:defstyle.ddif","stored_semantics") -
then set file /semantics=ddif cda$library:defstyle.ddif
I removed the middle "then" statement and the if then else
message went away but I still don't have decwindows logo and username
window. (edited this command string to be like the earlier version
of decwindows)
This is decwindows version that comes with 5.3.

2609.1 | Can you log in anywhere? | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Old fashion teddy bear | Fri Apr 13 1990 13:31 | 8 |
| Can you log in from a non-DECwindows terminal? It sounds like you are
resource short. If indeed there are some images that are not getting
installed, the usual culprit is either GBLSECTIONS or GBLPAGES. Try
doing a MIN boot and log in and examine resources. The extra memory
will make VMS use more memory, but I have absolutely no idea if the
two could be related.

That wasn't the problem. My cda$library was gone! Comepletely!
A user was concerened about disk space and I think she deleted it.
Guess who gets privileges taken away.
Am I glad I'm taking time off next week!
