2608.0. "NOTEPAD" by SHALOT::GELBER (taken by a photograph of you . . .) Fri Apr 13 1990 07:28
A question about NOTEPAD:
When a user opened NOTEPAD for the first time, it came up "Read Only," and
a message displayed to the effect that the journal file couldn't be
created.
The user didn't create or save anything that day, and tried it a few days
later, with the same results and error message. He opened a file,
entered text, and saved it, and it all worked fine.
Our question: what could cause the read-only and lack of journal file?
Thanks,
Edie
P.S. I tried to search on title and keyword for this topic, but each search
took over an hour, with no results. Sorry if I'm duplicating material.

According to the notepad developer:
> When a user opened NOTEPAD for the first time, it came up "Read Only," and

> created.
Right. I believe the exact message text this user saw was:
"Cannot create journal file in this directory."
In other words, they had no permission to open a file in this directory.
Perhaps not the most informative error message in the world,
but I would have thought most users would get the drift. :-)
