2581.0. "How does server exploit graphics accelerators?" by MDVAX3::CHANDLER (Shoot lo boys, they're ridin' shetland ponies!) Fri Apr 06 1990 18:20
Hi,
With the empending availability of the 2D and 3D graphics hardware
accelerators on the DS5000, can anyone tell me how this hardware is
exploited on the server side?
More specifically, does all of the graphics acceleration techniques
reside in the device drivers or does the X server kernel have to be
modified to take advantage of this hardware?
Someone (not me) would like to plug in the MIT X server (R4) in
place of our R3 server and still get the advantages of the hardware
accelerators. Can this be done?
Thanks,
Jim

2581.1 | Can you say Server Extension ? | GSRC::WEST | Variables don't, Constants aren't | Mon Apr 09 1990 12:35 | 8 |
|
It is done with a server extension.
This has been done for over a year on the VS3520/40 with PEX (Phigs+ extension
to X) for DEC PHIGS.
