2464.0. "Other xport protocols?" by MEO78B::LYONS (Peter Lyons) Sun Mar 18 1990 20:41

    Hello,

Is there any plans to incorporate other types of network transport
protocols other than DECnet and TCP/IP for DECwindows/Motif?

I am looking at presenting CDA/DECwindows/VTX to a straegic financial
account over here in Australia who have a considerable investment in
    IBM equipment.

This account has been told that Digital is comming out with Token Ring
and support for Token Ring in the next 9 - 12 months. I would very
much like to be able to tell them or even allude to Digital supporting
the display of DECwindow/Motif applications over an SNA network on a
PS/2 running DECwindows for the PS/2.

Can anyone give me both the official and unofficial directions Digital
    is considering in this area?

It would seem to me to be terrific if we could include this type of
functionality under our NAS umbrella and could conceivably make it
easier to penetrate into 'Big Blue' accounts.

thanks for your help in advance

    regards Peter

You should probably contact the IBM interconnect people and/or the PCSA people
and ask them if they will do it. I doubt that this kind of question would be
answered directly in a conference like this.

To expand a bit on .1, the interface for writing transports is
public, documented, supported in V5.3 and beyond. It might make sense
for Digital to offer other transports as products, and you could work
with appropriate product management to make your requirements known.
You could also do them yourself using the supported interface as
    one-offs for specific situations.
