2445.0. "VWS-->DECW...extra lines on screen" by CGRAMS::MAILLET () Wed Mar 14 1990 10:59

I have just upgraded one of our last workstations from VWS to DECW. We're
running VMS(5.2), DECW V1, 15 fine-running-DECW workstations, etc.

However, this one node has additional lines splattered all over the place.
It's found in DECterm windows, session manager, icon box, everywhere.

When we exit from VTX, the lines change color. This leads me to believe that
something on the WS was set up in VWS, that's causing the problem, something in
a "weird" plane?

Is there a way I can reset the colors on the VSII/GPX to factory settings?

BTW, I've tried rebuilding roots, etc. I also have print-screen-dump if
anyone's interested.

thanks in advance...

    Are these lines vertical? Are you also missing the inside edges of
    some windows? If you are... and you have a VSII/GPX (which you say
    you do)... you may have a ADDER 1 board. VWS up until Version 4.2
    supported a early version of the GPX boards that had bugs (which it
    worked around)... DECwindows never had it. VWS dropped support
    (without warning) in V4.2.

    Take a screwdriver and short it out and call FS :-)

2445.2probably HW... I may swap in another VSII and look-seeCHCAGO::MAILLETWed Mar 14 1990 13:1215
The lines are vertical, and appear (in DECterm windows) in every other
character cell. In window areas that have fonted print, the vertical lines
also show up, lined up exactly as the fixed-size DECterm window.

One more thing to note, the line shows up only in printed areas, and is the
same height as the character that it prints. For example, an "S" looks like $,
a "3" almost looks like "B". Lowercase letters that are half-height, only have
the line half-high. And spaces produce no line.

So, Fred, you seem to think it's HW? Appears to me that you're right.

Meanwhile, I'll re-install VWS (read: SYSGEN SET WINDOW 2), and work with F/S.

thanks for the help...

    Some old hardware-type fart (Jeff? You there?) might be able to tell
    you how to tell a Adder 1 from an Adder 2... It's my first guess when
    A) UIS works but DECW doesn't, B) UIS is pre-V4.2 and C) It appears as
    vertical lines along the edges of rectangles/windows.

2445.4Don't believe there was ever a chip rev level/idSTAR::BMATTHEWSThu Mar 15 1990 13:197
Adder 1 boards contain an early rev of the GPX adder chip that clipped to
boundaires that were a multiple of 4 pixels. This version of the chip never
shipped to customers. UIS figured out it was an adder one by writing out
pixels that should be clipped out by a version of the chip that clipped to
individual pixel boundaries and then reading back the results to see if the
pixels were clipped out or not.

But, if one of the Vipers is bad, you might see what your seeing.
