2390.0. "Password Expiration problem" by HPSRAD::LINDSEY () Mon Mar 05 1990 10:49

    I have a user whose password had expired and decwindows would not allow
    him to log in giving a truncation error. He had to enter the system
    by means of setting host and then typing in the new password.

    Should DECwindows be able to handle this problem and bring up a screen
    for the user to change his expired password? We are running VMS V5.3

    Thanks,

    Sue

    DECwindows should be able to handle any expired password in the
    same way as character-cell VMS loginout. Please QAR the details
    in the DECWINDOWS-IFT database on TRIFID.
2390.2who suggests passwords that won't work anyway ?HANNAH::OSMANsee HANNAH::IGLOO$:[OSMAN]ERIC.VT240Tue Mar 06 1990 15:2810
I seem to recall seeing a situation where the system attempted to
SUGGGEST some random passwords, but when I tried to pick one of the suggested
ones, it told me that the minimum length is 15.

Why would it suggest passwords it won't even accept ?

Is this a known already-qared problem ?

Seems to me the situation in .1 is a local implementation problem.

The doucmentation on SET PASSWORD/GENERATE states that it will generate
passwords of up to 12 characters. If a site decides to implement some
restriction on passwords that the minimum is 15, then that will blow away the
capability of using this tool.

Shooting ourselves in the foot again?

2390.4generated passwords unusable ?HANNAH::OSMANsee HANNAH::IGLOO$:[OSMAN]ERIC.VT240Fri Mar 09 1990 11:058

    But I think INSPECT, that everyone is required to install, demands that
    certain accounts have a 15-character minimum for passwords.

    Hence it's kind of silly for the generated passwords to not be of
    the required length, right ?

    Inspect requires priv'ed accounts to have either 8 character generated
    ot 15 character user-defined passwords.
