2351.2 | I read the SPD | FEGPX::SWEENEY | Patrick Sweeney in Hong Kong | Mon Feb 26 1990 23:31 | 10 |
| There's no mention of support for the multi-head configuration for VMS
5.3 in the SPD therefore I'd be very cautious about discussing any
multi-head configuration with a customer. The SPD describes what
Digital is supporting, and it is always the source for the answer to
the question "Does Digital support feature f in product p?"
In fact, without a PID, I don't even think customers should hear of, or
see, a multi-head configuration for VMS.
I'll let someone else do the research for ULTRIX.

2351.3 | I assume this was meant to be in the kit | HANDVC::SIMONSZETO | Simon Szeto @HGO, Hongkong | Tue Feb 27 1990 03:20 | 15 |
| "Multi" means "more than one," right? It's true what Pat said about SPD
and official support. However, I had occasion to peruse the following file
recently, and I found it replete with examples of two-headed support. You
don't need a PID to read this file. (I'm on V5.3-1 if that makes any
difference.)

Sorry to mention not yet announced products ...
And sorry to ask my questions again. This multi-head configurations
point is already obscur enough and need to be clarify it on some
points.
As you certainely know the competition is already able to provide
this environment and it is certainely interesting to know precisely
what DIGITAL is doing about that.
Except topics related to this products, could we state on the others
possibilities like VS3100, multi GPX, and their limitations, etc ...
Is there any place else to discuss this subject ???

2351.5 | Multi-head will be supported at hardware FRS | STAR::BMATTHEWS | | Tue Feb 27 1990 08:11 | 16 |
| I consider multi-head supported for the vs3100 (color + mono) and dual color
for the VSII/GPX and VS3500/GPX. The reason it is not in the SPD for 5.3 is
that the hardware was not yet built/qualified. Worksystems is building a cable
for the vs3100. The dual color may have to be qualified but since it was
supported multi-seat for UWS I don't know if that is really true. The SPD is
not updated on "dash" releases which is why multi-head support is not listed
in the SPD. Same goes for SPX. Both should be in the 5.4 SPD.
Multi-head on the vs3100 is a VERY cheap way of getting substantial extra
screen area. I believe the cable is going to be about $50 and you need a
monochrome monitor and you are all set. I would see this is a very desireable
setup for software development of decwindows applications because you can
debug the app on one screen and display the app on the other screen and it is
much cheaper than 2 workstations.

The VMS V5.3 DECW$PRIVTATE_SERVER_SETUP.TEMPLATE file is almost
identical to the V5.3-1 version including multihead support.
