2334.0. "Multi-head on DECstation 3100?" by BAVIKI::GOOD (Michael Good) Thu Feb 22 1990 09:10

All the notes with the multi-head keyword that I looked at dealt
with VMS, rather than UNIX. So...

Is multi-head support (2 screens, 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, 1 cpu) available
on the DECstation 3100 systems? I seem to recall it was available with
Unix before it was available on VMS, but my memory is foggy about that.
By available, I mean available for customers, rather than available
internally.

If so, could you please provide a pointer for more information?

Thanks,
Michael

The DECstation 3100 does not have the hardware capability to have
two screens. It can only have a single color frame buffer. (or a single
mono).

Mike,

THe old VSII GPX allowed two SEATS under X10. Multi head on the VAXstations
I think is only supported for two heads under one server.

UWS supports the VS II/GPX system in a multi-headed configuration.
Here 'multi-headed' means two displays, two keyboards, two mice.
This has worked every since X10 days, it still works now.

On the other hand 'multi-screen' means one keyboard, one mouse, more
than one monitor. This is not (yet) supported by UWS.

But works under VMS V5.3 provided you have the correct cable.
(Not yet available but I'm hearing good things from worksystems)

I have a cobbled-together cable and believe me, the extra
screen real estate is GREAT! It takes about 20 minutes to get
used to this but it comes very naturally.

BTW, the second head is only MONO in this configuration.
	(VS2000 or VS3100)

See cheese::X-Terminals conference. There is work in progress to
provide multi-head X-terminals. If there is a sales opportunity, talk
with Mike Ritz, or, for X-Terminals, Mike Breen.
