2290.0. "Problems starting server on VS3100 running Ultrix" by VINO::STEVENS () Fri Feb 16 1990 12:58

Hi,

I have been running VMS Decwindow on my workstation and just switched over
to Ultrix. I installed the software from CD-Rom the installation went fine
I just did a basic installation to see if I could get this going.

When I booted the system after the installation it came up fine but the
server never started. When I tried to start it by hand by doing
/usr/bin/Xqdsg I get the following error:

	Could'nt get SG device map
	InitSg: Could'nt get FIFO buffer

Is there something I am not doing that I missed. I was under the impression
the the UWS software would start automatically when I booted the system.

I am familiar with Ultrix but not in a workstation environment. I also
dont have much experience in system management with Ultrix.

Any suggestion would be appreciated. Or if there is anywhere in the
Ultrix Docs that talks about this (I did'nt see anything).

Thanks,

Marc

Power-off/power-on and,
boot to single user mode,
Run 'fsck' and 'shutdown -r now' to see what
happens.

Hope you are not having hardware or faulty software
installation problems.

I solved my own problem. I had the console of my 3100 going to the printer
port and used a session on my vt330. So what I did was switched the console
back to the graphics monitor and reinstalled Ultrix. Once I did that
everything came up fine. For some reason when the system was being configured
it must have thought there was no graphics device since the console was not a
graphics device.

By the way does anyone know if there is a way to set up an alternate console
running Ultrix?

Thanks,
Marc
