2262.0. "SYSTEM can start applications, why not VESPER?" by 3D::VESPER (Spare the tantrum and spoil the progenitor) Tue Feb 13 1990 13:11
I am having a bit of trouble (re-)starting the login window. When I
start a server manually and want to log onto the decwindows, I log in
as VESPER and do:
$ set proc/priv=all
$ @sys$manager:decw$startup apps
This worked on my system before I upgraded to VMS 5.3 SSB. I don't know
what had been running before, but I think it was a field test version
of 5.3. I now get:
%W, no such device available
%W, no such device available
(That's right, two copies of the message. One comes from the command
to RUN SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$STARTLOGIN and the other from EXIT $STATUS
so there is only one error.)
If I log in as SYSTEM, it works perfectly.
If anyone has any thoughts on why this happens, or better, what I can
do to get it to work under my own account, please reply or send
mail.
Thanks, Andy V

2262.1 | SYSTEM can't run it now! | 3D::VESPER | Spare the tantrum and spoil the progenitor | Wed Feb 14 1990 11:43 | 6 |
| Now I can't even run this from the SYSTEM account -- please help if you can!
Same symptoms -- %SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHDEV, no such device available
when the .COM file runs sys$system:decw$startlogin
Thanks, Andy V
