2188.0. "Image display problem using DECwindows + PC-DECwindows." by KETJE::DE_BOEVER (DESKtop Integration program mgr. Belgium) Fri Feb 02 1990 09:58

Hello,

Apparently there seems to be a problem with the interaction between
DECwindows on VMS and PC-DECwindows. See the included conference below which
was copied from the PCDECwindows notes file. Can anyone of you give us a clue ?

Regards,
Jan.

Note 305.0 DECwrite problem with scanned images 2 replies

PC DECwindows V2.0 is great on my European DECstation-350 (Olivetti). However
did stumble upon a few problems whem running DECwrite.

In our demo environment we show the possibilities to exchange documents,
images, spreadsheets among various platforms using CDA converters etc...
When we create a DECwrite document with a link to an image that image is
distorted. You see the overall shape of the image but apparently the pixels are
inverted within boxes of about the shape of a character cell. It's difficult to
explain in words. It seems like a big-endian/little-endian problem. That same
document with the link to the image displayed on a DECstation-xxxx or a
VAXstation displays without problem.

Another problem is that the display of a chart (link to a chart) does display
that chart but with some horizontal lines crossing the chart. Those lines are
not seen when displayed on a DECstation-xxxx or a VAXstation.

If needed I can send a copy of the Document with the images included.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problems with the bit order in images is the fault of DECwrite.
The video RAM uses least-significant-byte-first ordering of bytes within
words, and most-significant-bit-first ordering of bits within bytes.
The bit order is just backwards of the bit order on the DEC workstations.
The X server makes this information availible to the application. It
is the application's responsibility to convert images if neccessary.

There were a lot of these "bit-order" problems with the V1 DECwindows
applications. The developers have fixed most of them, but there still
seem to be a few. You might want to make sure that you have the
latest releases of the applications.

The problem of horizontal lines across the screen sounds like a server
bug. Which server were you running, DWDOS286 or DWDOS386?

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. Yes we are using the latest versions (VMS V5.3).

    2. Concerning the displaying of the spreadsheet. I was using DWDOS286.
