I don't know for sure why you're seeing this. One guess is that
you're trying to run UWS on a non-workstation system. The 3100S
is a multi-user server system, not a workstation. Did you modify
the system and add a graphics controller and display?

If it really is a workstation then it should be running okay. The
fallback hackery is to login as root and edit the file
/etc/ttys. Look for a line beginning with :0. If you don't find
a line like that then things are defininately setup wrong. If
you do find that line but it has a # in from of then remove the
    # and edit the line for tty0 at the top of the file. Change
the word 'on' to 'off'. Then save the file and do a
'kill -1 1' command to restart the console terminal line. That
    should do it.

If you are missing the :0 line completely then you'll need to build
one. It should something like this:

    :0 "/usr/bin/login -P /usr/bin/Xprompter -C /usr/bin/dxsession" none on
    secure window="/usr/bin/Xmfb"

(The above is all ONE line, no carriage return is in it despite how
it looks in this note.) For a color system replace Xmfb with Xcfb.

    That should set you up.
