2155.0. "ICON BOX control requested" by CSC32::JJONES (Jeff Jones) Sat Jan 27 1990 23:10

Previous to vms 5.3 I used to be able to control characteristics of my ICON
BOX from settings inside DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT. Such as:

# window manager
wm*flash: True
wm*geometry: =300x850+730+1
wm*titleBar.highlight: tan
wm*titleBar.background: CadetBlue
wm*sticky: True

Now it no longer reacts to this. My question is simple: Can I regain the control
that I once had on the ICON BOX (WinMgr)?

thanks, jjjones

I find that I can still control the colors using the V1 color resource
names. To control the geometry however, you must resize the window,
and then save the customization by pressing MB2 while the pointer is
in the ICON box window. I don't know about the other resources that
    you mentioned.

That is great. Where the heck is this documented?

jjjones
2155.3Not all of it is documentedAGBEAR::HORNERA.G.Bear, Old fashion teddy bearMon Jan 29 1990 17:2819
The color stuff isn't documented, since I do it through an XDEFAULTS
file. Here is what I've found, substitute your own colors.

	wm*borderColor: #000000000000
	wm*titleBar.foreground: #000000000000
	wm*titleBar.background: #FFFFCCCCAAAA
	wm*titleBar.highlight: #000077779999
	wm*iconBox*foreground: #FFFFFFFFFFFF
	wm*iconBox*background: #FFFF55558888
	wm*iconBox.foreground: #000000000000
	wm*iconBox.background: #6666BBBBCCCC

The resizing and saving the ICON box window geometry is documented in
the V5.3 DECwindows release notes. I can't find my copy at the moment
to give you a page number. A message saying something about pressing
MB2 to customize the ICON box window is also displayed sometime after
    it is created.

You can turn flash on and off through the customize menu
	in the icon box.

What I'd like to know is how to get my sticky icon box back.
	Is there a way?

I cannot remember if I edited DECW$WINMGR.DAT or just applied the
sticky window and Saved Settings (I think the latter), but my line
reads:

*sticky.state:	1

No need for that. Just make it sticky (Shift-click on the push-to-back
button) and then use MB2 to save your configuration. Stickiness is saved
along with the size and position of the box.

It's the latter... Apply the sticky state and save..

Thanks Nancy!! (the person who did this)

    re: .4

You can also save "flash", its just not called flash.
Its "animated windows" in the customize window, then
    save.

2155.9Can Icon box quantize Icon positions?RHETT::GILBERTJeff Gilbert, VMS workstations support, CSC/ATMon Feb 05 1990 17:118
Is there any way to get the Icon box to quantize the positions of
the icons so they kind of click into slots the way they used to
under version 1? For me, it was much easier to keep the Icon Box
	tidy that way.

	Thanks,
	jeff

The slots are not changeable in dimension. The window manager
checks for the presence of a pixmap and doesn't cover it up with
another pixmap. There were many complaints about the jumpiness
when an icon is moved - so the dimension of the grid was reduced.
Additionally, the jumpiness changed magnitude when the resolution
    of the terminal changed.

There have been many requests for different ways to tidy
the icon box.... this has been noted.
