Is the limiting factor for the maximum number of ICONS an operating system limitation (number of processes) or is there an additional DECWINDOWs configuration parameter? thanx, -ed

2108.1 | 32 client connections ? | WAIT::DESAI | Jatin Desai | Tue Jan 23 1990 09:27 | 6 |
There is an upper limit of 32 client connections to DECwindows X servers. Apparently this was due to some engineering tradeoff. I have not heard of any limits on number of icons. Jatin | |||||
2108.2 | what are icons, etc. | CALL::SWEENEY | Patrick Sweeney in New York | Sun Jan 28 1990 13:20 | 15 |
There are many definitions of "icon". An icon is basically a pixmap or a window that has some singular semanics (ie one simple meaning). Icons which appear in the window manager icon box are the creations of the window manager client. The semantics of these icons is that they map and unmap other windows when MB1 is pressed and released on one of them. As for what's the maximum, why not run a program, create a bunch of toplevel shells (they are the kind that the window manager will create icons for) and see how many get created before the window manager or the server blows up? You know, even if the implementer of the window manager supplied an answer here as a reply, it still could be wrong unless actually tested. |
