2064.0. "Replacing Digital Logo in V2 DECwindows" by CSC32::L_HERZLICH (Larry Herzlich*CSC/VSG CX03-2/D4*DTN 592-4018) Wed Jan 17 1990 20:55

We're starting to get some calls about the ability to replace the Digital
logo in the login window. This was in the V5.3 New Features (sec. 3.2).
Unfortunately, there is no more information about how to do this in the
documentation.

I was wondering what would happen if we offer the VMS version of XSetRoot
as an "example" program for displaying X bitmaps to our customers. I thought
that the program comes on the MIT distribution for Unix but am afraid that
we may have either some copyright problems or support problems.

Any suggestions? Was the information in the New Features manual premature or
was it the intention to be vague? (BTW, I've cross posted this to the
DECwindows Documentation conference).

    If you look in ELKTRA::DW_EXAMPLES you will find an example of this.

2064.3Yes, but is it customer readableCSC32::L_HERZLICHLarry Herzlich*CSC/VSG CX03-2/D4*DTN 592-4018Thu Jan 18 1990 20:5819
I realize that there are several "digital-home-grown" programs to display
graphics in the root window. The problem is deciding what to
give a customer. The reason XSetRoot seems the most likely choice
is because of it's origin on the MIT tape. I think the customer might
have heard of this from the Ultrix world.

I'm trying to head the problem of supporting something that no one
will maintain. I would hope that XSetRoot would change along with the
releases of X11 and be updated since it's more universal in the X world.
Also, I think XSetRoot is more general since it understands that small
X-bitmaps should be tiled into the window. All the examples that I've
seen don't do this automatically.

What about copyright? This is Digital software in DECW_EXAMPLES. Is it
for "internal use only"?

       RE: .3

       	No, I didn't mean any home-brew application. The way to do it
       is stated in DQ_EXAMPLES but basically, and this is from a foggy
       memory, you define a logical to point to a command procedure. This
       command procedure would do something like Xsetroot OR a simple
       VIEW/FORMAT=DDIF/INTERFACE=DECWINDOWS filename.  Supposedly not
       difficult.. I just haven't gotten around to playing with it.
